Lesson 14: Found Object Weaving

Objective: To have children create a weaving with texture and pattern using a loom and adding found object for additional texture.

Vocabulary:

found object - A common or everyday object used in new ways as part of an artwork. Found objects are often used in assemblages and can be natural or manufactured.

loom - An device for making fabric by weaving yarn or thread.

pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.

tactile (actual) texture - The way a surface of a real object feels when you touch it. Smooth, rough, soft, hard, and furry are words that describe tactile textures.

weaving - An artwork made by lacing together (placing over then under) fibers such as yarn, thread, or strips of fabric. Rugs and baskets are kinds of weaving.

Studio Time: Found Object Weaving

Materials:

Cardboard or Loom, Yarn, Tissue Paper, Tape, Paper Strips, Found Objects (vines, grass, pine needles, seashells, etc...), Craft Supplies (cloth, ribbon, etc...)

Plan

Think about patterns and textures you would like to put in a weaving.
Check list:
- Create a weaving.
- Add actual textures with found objects.

Create

Wrap yarn around a piece of cardboard to make a loom.

2. Weave things like paper strips, ribbons, vines, and grass. Add found objects

Challenge: Twig Weaving

Create a weaving with a twig and yarn adding natural objects to give it additional texture.
