Lesson 9: Tinted Candy

Objective: To have children use tinted colors (light colors) to their favorite candy or ice cream.

Vocabulary:

tint - A lighter value of color made by mixing a color with white.

value - The lightness or darkness of a color.

Light Colors

Look at Les Tuileries by Pablo Picasso. Do you think the people in the painting knew they were going to the park? Tell why? Why do you think the artist used light colors in the painting?

Tints
Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. A tint is a lighter value of color made by mixing a color with white.

Studio Time: Tinted Candy

Materials:

Dark Construction Paper, Tempera Paint (white, red, yellow, and blue), Water, Paint Brushes, Paper Towels, Drinking Straws, Smocks or Old Shirts

Plan

Think about when you have seen light colors in places. What candies are tinted or have light packaging?
Check list:
- Mix white with colors to create tinted colors.
- Mix the secondary colors you made with white to create tints.
- Drip paint onto the paper with a paint brush.
- Use straw to blow the paint in different directions.

Create

Draw the outline of your favorite candy. Imagine what it would look like with only tinted colors (light colors). Draw big so your candy fills the paper.
Mix white with your colors to create tinted (lighter) colors.
Paint the creature first and background second.
