Lesson 20: Garden Design

Objective: To have the children create a garden design drawing that shows emphasis.

Vocabulary:

earthwork - A kind of art that is made of natural materials and placed in a natural setting. Also called land art.

emphasis - A design principle used to make a part of the artwork stand out, show which part of an artwork is most important, or a focal point.

landscape design - The analysis, planning, and design of exterior spaces.

Earthworks are artworks that are designed to be outdoors and are made of natural materials. Artists who make earthworks arrange their materials in natural environments. They can create emphasis by using contrasting lines, shapes, colors, forms, or textures.

Now look at Surrounded Islands by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The artists surrounded real islands with floating fabric. Why do you think the artists used the color pink? Would you notice this artwork for a distance if the artist used blue fabric instead?

Studio Time: Garden Design

Materials:

Sketchbooks, Pencils, White Paper, Colored Pencils, Crayons

Plan

Think of a garden design you would like to create. Picture what the garden would look like from above.
Check list:
- Create a landscape design that includes a walking path.
- Create emphasis by using contrasting shapes and colors.

Create

Draw your garden design on white paper. Draw different shapes to show how plants would be arranged.
Include a path for people to walk on in your garden.
Use crayons or colored pencils to color your garden design.

Reflect - Tell about your artwork.

Photograph and Submit your work on Google Classroom.

Photograph sketches as well as completed artwork.
"Add" (attach) to Google Classroom assignment.
"Mark as done" to submit your work for a grade.
