Lesson 11: Patterned Picture Frame

Objective: To have children create a picture frame using repetition of shapes to create patterns.

Vocabulary:

border or frame - a strip that goes around or along the edge of something, often as decoration.

pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.

repetition - the use of lines, shapes, colors, or forms more than once.

shape - A flat (two-dimensional) object that has length and height and creates an closed space. Shapes can be geometric, organic, or free-form.

Shapes Make Patterns

What does each artwork show? What shapes make up the big star in the quilt?

Point to the arms of the star and to the flowers. Name the shapes: triangle, flower, triangle, flower. Repeating shapes, lines, or colors make a pattern.

Every pattern has repetition, or repeating parts. What repetition does this art show? What comes next in the flag pattern?

Studio Time: Patterned Picture Frame

Materials:

Ruler, Construction Paper, Crayons, Markers, Paints, Paintbrushes, Found Objects (seashells, pebbles, etc...), Craft Supplies (pom poms, fabric, ribbon, etc...), Glue

Plan

Think about the shapes and colors you will use to create a pattern.
Check list:
- Cut out a frame
- Repeat lines, colors, and shapes to create a pattern

Create

Short side the paper two times. Use scissors to cut on the inside and outside of paper to create a frame.
Cut out shapes to create a pattern. * Fold paper before cutting to make identical shapes.
Glue shapes on the frame to create a pattern.

Challenge: Picture Frame Transfer

Create a picture frame using a pencil transfer and finishing with markers and watercolor.
