Lesson 11: Self-Portrait

Objective: To have the children create a self-portrait drawing using correct proportions.

Vocabulary:

portrait - An artwork that shows a person, a group of people, or an animal as the main subject matter.

proportion - The size and placement of one thing compared with the size and placement of other things.

purpose - The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists, such as narrative, info, time-piece, aesthetic, process, etc...

self-portrait - A portrait of an artist made by himself or herself.

setting - The place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.

subject or subject matter - What an artwork is about.

Portraits

A portrait is a picture of a person. Artists use proportion to make portraits look lifelike. Proportion is the size and placement of some things compared with other things. Look at Portrait of Virginia by Frida Kahlo. Notice that the girl's eyes are halfway between her chin and the top of her head. Where is her nose compared with her eyes and chin? What do you notice about where her mouth and ears are placed?

I Myself Portrait-Landscape by Henri Rousseau

I Myself Portrait-Landscape by Henri Rousseau is a self-portrait. The artist painted a portrait of himself. Artists sometimes include things in self-portraits to tell about themselves. What can you tell about this artist from his self-portrait.

Materials:

Pencil, Mirror, White Paper, Colored Pencils

Think of some objects that tell something about you. Decide how you could include them in your self-portrait.
Check list:
- Create a self-portrait.
- Use correct facial proportions.
- Include something that tells something about you.

Create

Look at yourself in a mirror. Sketch your face on white paper.
Make sure you use proportion in your drawing. Use the diagram below to help you draw your eyes, nose, ears, and mouth.

3. Add details to your self-portrait with colored pencils. Include at least one object that tells something about you.

Challenge: Profile Silhouette

Create a silhouette of your profile, glue onto another piece of paper and decorate the negative space.
