Lesson 19: Amazing School Model

Objective: To have the children create a model of a school using construction paper.

Vocabulary:

architect - A person who designs buildings, bridges, or cities.

architecture - The art and science of planning and creating buildings.

geometric form - An object that has height, width, and depth whose sides are made up of geometric shapes; such as sphere, cylinder, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid, and cone.

model - A three-dimensional (3D) likeness of an object usually on a smaller size than the original object.

Architecture

How are the buildings alike and different? Architecture is the art and science of planning buildings and other structures. An architect is a person who plans what they will look like.

What lines, shapes, and forms did the architects use in these buildings? How do they look like things in nature?

Materials:

Cardboard, Tape, Glue, Boxes (small milk cartons, shoe boxes, small gift boxes, etc...), Paper Tubes, Construction Paper, Paper, Tagboard, Paint, Paintbrushes, Scissors

Plan

Think about how the most amazing school would look like and the objects that you would see there.
Check list:
- Decide what your school will look like and the objects you would see there.
- Create a model of the building using paper.

Create

Use 3D paper modeling techniques to make a model of an amazing school.
Decorate it. Add a sign and other details that might be around the school.

Challenge: Amazing Classroom

Create a diorama of a classroom using various materials.
