print - An artwork made by pressing an object covered with wet color against a flat surface.
radial symmetry - A type of symmetry in which a pattern extends from the center of an artwork, like spokes of a wheel.
rhythm - Repeating art elements (dots, lines, shapes, forms, space, textures, colors, values, and time) in various ways or the sense of movement created by repeated art elements.
stamping - Pressing an object covered with wet color against a flat surface.
Sun Shines by Beatricia Sagar and Untitled by Tanaya show examples of prints. To make prints, artists paint a design on a flat object or printing block. While the paint is still wet, they press the block onto a piece of paper. Artists can create many prints by using the same printing block.
Look at the print in Sun Shines. What shapes are repeated? Artists can create rhythm in an artwork by repeating lines, shapes, colors, or patterns. Rhythm guides your eyes around the artwork. It can also make you feel a certain way. Doe the print in Sun Shines remind you of a summer day or a winter day? Why?
The artist of Untitled created rhythm by printing the same design four times. How do your eyes move around Untitled? How did the artist create variety?

Think of some symbols that tell about you or something that is important to you. Sketch these symbols.
Check list:
- Create a kaleidoscope print with radial symmetry.
- Use different objects to show variety
- Used repeated design to show rhythm.
Use a large paper plate to trace the shape of a circle onto white paper. Use a ruler and a pencil to divide your circle into eight "pie-shaped" sectors. Cut out the circle.
Pour small amounts of different paint colors onto your plate. Dip different small objects into the paint. Press them onto a section of your cutout circle.
Repeat the same design in each section of your circle to create rhythm.
Photograph sketches as well as completed artwork.
