Lesson 7: Textured Collage

Objective: To have the children create a collage with tactile and visual texture.

Vocabulary:

fiber - A material such as cloth, yarn, string, or thread.

tactile (actual) texture - The way a surface of a real object feels when you touch it. Smooth, rough, soft, hard, and furry are words that describe tactile textures.

visual (implied) texture - The way a flat picture or artwork looks, as if you could feel it.

Tactile Texture and Visual Texture
Have you ever touched the bark of a tree? How would you describe what you felt? The surface of a real object has tactile texture. This is what the object feels like when you touch it. Look at Flowering Tree by Chris Kenny. The artist has used line, color, and value to create visual texture. Visual texture shows the appearance of texture on a drawn or painted surface. How would you describe the texture you see in Flowering Tree?

Studio Time: Textured Collage

Materials:

Objects with Different Textures, Tissue Paper, Crayons, Scissors, Glue, Poster Board, Yarn, String

Plan

Find objects with different textures, such as a feather, a sponge, a group of tooth picks, or the sole of a shoe.
Check list:
- Use specialty papers and crayon rubbings to create visual texture.
- Use fiber and other objects to create tactile texture.
- Arrange objects to make an interesting image before gluing.

Challenge: Texture Line Prints

Create a texture print with yarn using a variety of lines styles then ink and transfer to another paper.
