Lesson 18: Building Model

Objective: To have the children construct three-dimensional (3D) buildings containing a variety of forms and shapes.

Vocabulary:

architect - A person who designs buildings, bridges, or cities.

architecture - The art and science of planning and creating buildings.

geometric form - An object that has height, width, and depth whose sides are made up of geometric shapes; such as sphere, cylinder, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid, and cone.

model - A three-dimensional (3D) likeness of an object usually on a smaller size than the original object.

process - A series of actions or steps takes in order to achieve a particular ending.

style - A particular way in which something is done, created, performed, formed, or designed.

Form in Architecture

What forms do you see in these buildings?

The art of planning and making buildings is architecture. Some people make the drawings. Other people use the drawings to build the buildings.

Studio Time: Building Model

Materials:

Clay, Sculpture Tools, Objects for adding texture (paper clips, pencils, jar lids, coins, classrooms objects, etc...)

Plan

Draw a building you want to make.
Check list:
- Decide what kind of building you will create.
- Create a model of the building using paper.

Create

Fold the paper. Make building forms. Add details.

2. Put the building together. Tape or glue the forms.

Challenge: Box Town

Create buildings from cereal boxes, using scissors to cut out doors and windows, add details with construction paper and paint.
