atmospheric perspective - A technique used to create a sense of depth in a two-dimensional artwork by using dull (diffused) colors and fuzzy edges in the middle-ground or background.
focus - The way we see an object, in-focus meaning clear and well-defined, or out-of-focus meaning blurry and indistinct.
impasto - A technique of painting that creates a bumpy surface by using thick brushstrokes.
Impressionism - An art movement of the late nineteenth century in which artists painted the way light and color looked at a certain moment in time.
intensity (Saturation vs. Diffusion) - The brightness or dullness of a color.
plein air - The practice of painting outdoors; from the French for "open air."
Impressionism
The same building is shown in both Rouen Cathedral, Impression of Morning by Claude Monet and Rouen Cathedral, Bright Sun by Claude Monet. How are the two paintings alike? How are they different? How did the artist use color to show two different times of day?
These artworks were painted in the late nineteenth century in a style called Impressionism. The Impressionists were not interested in painting exact details. They wanted to show the way light and color looked at a certain moment in time. How do you think Claude Monet would show the Rouen Cathedral at sunset?
Outdoor Painters
The Impressionists often painted outdoors. Outdoor painting is called plein air (PLAYN AIR), which is French for "open air." Artists had usually painted outdoor scenes indoors, from memory. The Impressionists painted from real life instead. They painted very quickly to capture an impression of their subjects. Look at The Butterfly Hunt by Berthe Morisot. Why do you think the artist had to paint this subject very quickly.
Everyday Themes
Look at Children at the Beach by Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. What do you see? The impressionist painter captured a moment in his subjects' lives. Impressionism often focused on people doing ordinary things they enjoyed. Notice the thick brushstrokes in this painting. This technique, known as impasto (im-PAS-toh), gave the painting a bumpy tactile texture. Where do you see light and dark values? What time of day do you think he showed?
