Lesson 3: Overlapping Shape Collage

Objective: To have the children create a layered collage with geometric, organic, and free-form shapes.

Vocabulary:

collage - An artwork made by gluing bits of paper, fabric, scraps, photographs, or other materials to a flat surface.

free-form shapes - Made-up shapes that may use a combination of geometric and organic shapes that are created from the human imagination or manufactured (human-made).

geometric shape - Shapes used in math that have straight lines with angled corners or circular shapes with regular curves. There are two categories of geometric shapes: ovoid and polygon. Ovoid Shapes: circle, semi-circle, sector, oval and egg. Polygon Shapes: triangle, square, rectangle, kite (diamond), rhombus, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, etc...

organic shape - A natural shape that is made up of curved or irregular lines. Organic shapes appear in nature.

overlapping - The placement of objects in-front or behind to partly cover other objects. Artists use overlapping to show which objects are closest to the viewer.

two-dimensional (2D) - Having both height and width.

Geometric, Organic, and Free-Form Shapes

Shapes are two-dimensional, or flat. You can measure the height and width of a shape.
Artists use lines to make shapes. Geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, and triangles can be drawn with straight lines. Circles and ovals are geometric shapes that have curved edges. What geometric shapes do you see in Brazilian Tapestry by Unknown Artist?
Organic shapes are found in nature. They show things such as flowers and can be drawn with wavy lines and irregular borders. Find some organic shapes in Brazilian Tapestry. What objects from nature do they show?
Free-form shapes are made by people and are inventions or come from the imagination. Free-form shapes may use geometric shapes, organic shapes, or a combination of geometric and organic shapes. Free-form shapes can be found all around our home such as a car, hammer, fork, lamp, chair, trumpet, and scissors. What free-form objects can you find in your home?

Studio Time: Overlapping Shape Collage

Materials:

sketchbook, pencils, construction paper, scissors, glue

Plan

Think about a shape design made up of geometric, organic, and free-form shapes. Draw smaller shapes inside or overlapping larger shapes. Create a sketch of a picture that uses geometric, organic, and free-form shapes with overlapping. Label the colors you want to use on your sketch.

- Make sure to use overlapping in your sketch and layering construction paper on your finished artwork.

Create

Copy the shapes from your sketch onto colored construction paper.
Cut out the shapes.

3. Use sketch as a guide to place and layer shapes.
