Lesson 19: Outdoor Scene

Objective: To have the children create an outdoor scene drawing with contrast to show a focal point (center of interest).

Vocabulary:

contrast - A big difference between two parts of an artwork that makes one or both parts stand out.

emphasis - A design principle used to make a part of the artwork stand out, show which part of an artwork is most important, or a focal point.

focal point - The part of an artwork at which viewers stop and focus their attention.

scene - A place where action, an incident, or something is happening.

Focal Center of Interest

Look at The Cozy Coupe by Reynard Millci. What do you notice first. Why do you think so?
The part of an artwork that an artist wants you to see first is called the focal point. Artists use emphasis to make the viewer to look at the focal point. One way to create emphasis in an artwork is to use contrast. Lines, shapes, textures, and colors that are very different from each other have contrast.
Look at how the artist used contrasting colors to create emphasis in The Cozy Coupe. The bright colors on the toy car make it stand out. How are these colors different from the colors in the background?

Materials:

Sketchbooks, Pencils, White Paper, Colored Pencils

Sketch an idea for an outdoor scene. Choose one object in the scene to be your focal point
Check list:
- Create a scene with a focal point.
- Use emphasis and contrast to make one object the center of interest.

Copy your sketch onto white paper.

Challenge: Action Figure Painting

Create a painting with a figure in action that contrasts from the background, repeat the character using tint to make the figure lighter.
