balance - The way parts of an artwork work together so that the parts seem equal.
print - An artwork made by pressing an object covered with wet color against a flat surface.
symbol - A picture, word, figure, or object that stands for something or represents an idea.
visual weight - The importance given to objects of an artwork by their size, color, or placement. Artists use visual weight to create a sense of balance.
Symbols are pictures or objects that stand for ideas. Artists may use symbols to communicate ideas and feelings through art. The Fourth of July by Frederick Childe shows a celebration. What symbols did he use to express his feelings of patriotism? What kind of feeling do you get from The Fourth of July?
Different artists may convey the same message, such as patriotism, in different ways. Look at The American Farm by Warren Kimble. The artist used a subject as a symbol. The American Farm is a symbol of traditional rural life in the United States. How do you think the artist felt about rural life? What other symbols do you see in The American Farm? Describe the patterns the artist created. How did he use these patterns as symbols?
In George Washington by Sante Graziani, the artist put patriotic symbols together in a new way. What symbols do you recognize? What message do you think the artist is trying to convey? Does George Washington show symmetrical or asymmetrical balance?
