Lesson 25: Multi-Texture Collage

Objective: To have the children create a collage with unity and various textures.

Vocabulary:

collage - An artwork made by gluing bits of paper, fabric, scraps, photographs, or other materials to a flat surface.

tactile (actual) texture - The way a surface of a real object feels when you touch it. Smooth, rough, soft, hard, and furry are words that describe tactile textures.

unity - A design principle that creates the sense that an artwork is complete and that its parts work together as a whole.

visual (implied) texture - The way a flat picture or artwork looks, as if you could feel it.

Collage

A collage is an artwork made by gluing pieces of paper and other material to a flat surface. A collage artist may use cut paper, photographs, fabric, other kinds of scraps.
Still-Life #25 by Tom Wesselmann is a collage of an indoor scene. He often cut pictures from popular advertisements. Look at the different objects in Still-Life #25. Why does everything seem to belong in this scene? How did this artist create a feeling of unity?

Now look at Merz Picture 32A. (The Cherry Picture) by Kurt Schwitters. This abstract collage is made of wood, fabric, metal, and paper. Why do you think the artist of Merz Picture 32A. (The Cherry Picture) used different textures in his collage? How is the collage Merz Picture 32A. (The Cherry Picture) different from the collage Still-Life #25?

Studio Time: Multi-Texture Collage

Materials:

Sketchbooks, Pencils, Scrap Paper, Fabric, Scissors, Glue, Tagboard

Plan

Find a picture of an interesting scene in a magazine, book, or internet search. Think about materials and textures you can use to show the scene as a collage.
Check list:
- Create an collage with various textures.
- Use line and shape to unify your artwork.

Create

Draw the shapes for your collage on the materials you have chosen. Use repeated colors, shapes, and textures to create unity. Cut out the shapes.
Arrange the shapes on a background. Then glue down the shapes.

Reflect - Tell about your artwork.

Photograph and Submit your work on Google Classroom.

Photograph sketches as well as completed artwork.
"Add" (attach) to Google Classroom assignment.
"Mark as done" to submit your work for a grade.

Challenge: Still-Life Collage

Create a collage of a still-life starting with a horizon line and completing with pictures, felt, and found objects to create an interesting composition.
