Lesson 10: Texture Rubbing

Objective: To have the children create an arrangement of rubbings with various visual (implied) textures.

Vocabulary:

photorealism - A style of painting that looks like or almost like a photograph.

rubbing - An impression made by rubbing on paper laid on top of a design with crayon, pencil, chalk, or other media.

visual (implied) texture - The way a flat picture or artwork looks, as if you could feel it.

Dazzling Dozen by Charles Bell

Visual Texture

Look at Dazzling Dozen by Charles Bell. Does it show a photograph or a painting? Dazzling Dozen is an example of photorealism. Paintings in this style look almost like photographs.
How would you describe the tactile texture of real marbles? The artist of Dazzling Dozen painted the marbles to look smooth. Visual texture shows the way a real object would feel if you touched it. What color did the artist use to show light shining on the top of the marbles?

Basket 26 by Jack Gunter

Compare the visual textures of the objects in Basket 26 by Jack Gunter and the marbles in Dazzling Dozen. Notice how the artist of Basket 26 used many tiny lines to create the visual texture of the grass. What other objects in Basket 26 have visual texture?

Studio Time: Texture Rubbing

Materials:

Loom or 10" x 10" Cardboard Square, Ruler, Scissors, Tape, String, Yarn, Ribbons

Plan

Find at least five objects with different textures.
Check list:
- Create rubbings with different textures.
- Arrange rubbings and glue.
- Paint rubbings with watercolors.

Create

Find some objects with different textures. Cover each object with tracing paper. Rub peeled crayons on the paper to show the objects' textures.
Draw some organic or geometric shapes on the rubbings. Cut out the shapes.
Arrange the shapes on construction paper in an interesting way. Glue the shapes to the paper.
Paint the rubbings with watercolors.

Photograph sketches as well as completed artwork.

Create a picture of a magnifying glass and an object in regular and magnified view.
