Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.
It’s been a fantastic week for the pro-life-and-family movement here in Canada with three big wins.
First, the Federal government announced that it is indefinitely delaying the implementation of assisted suicide for the mentally ill after the plan received massive pushback from medical professionals along with citizens. The plan was to come into effect in March. And, now it won’t. Thank God for this victory.
How about some more good news?
New Brunswick private abortion facility Clinic 554 (the former Morgentaler Clinic) announced on Wednesday that it was closing its doors and will no longer be killing preborn children. While this may be a PR stunt to try force the province to fund the for profit baby-killing business, it’s still good news that babies won’t be killed there for the foreseeable future. Thank God again!
And, good things often come in threes.
The last piece of good news is that Alberta has delivered a massive blow to transgender ideology by announcing ground-breaking new policies that keep parents at the centre of their children’s lives and protect children from harmful sexual ideologies. CLC president Jeff Gunnarson called it a “political miracle.” And, indeed it is. Thank God again!
I wrote an opinion piece for Epoch Times that was published on Jan. 26 titled “Can Canada Be Saved From Extinction?” I laid out how contraception and abortion have devastated the fertility rate with the consequence that our country is heading toward extinction. Bravo to Epoch Times for running the entire piece unedited with all it’s powerful pro-life messaging. You can read an archived version of the article here with no paywall.
The “must-see” video of the week is Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s historical announcement of legislation to protect children. As CLC vice-president Matt Wojciechowski pointed out in our press release, the announcement, unfortunately, caters to the false notion that someone can change their sex.
As Matt rightly commented: “There is no such reality as someone being born in the wrong sex. Biologically and scientifically, a person is either male or female. Some of these new policies affirm what Smith calls an ‘adult choice’ to change one’s biological sex, which is a medical impossibility. The new policies, which include bringing transgender surgery mutilators into the province, propagate the lie of ‘gender identity’. This will cause further harm to children and adults struggling with mental illness and their families who are trying to help them embrace their God-given biological sex.”
Still, there is much good and it is worth a watch. The pro-trans left is certainly in meltdown mode over this video which has been viewed some 3 million times. This video will certainly go down in history as the first time in Canada that a premier took a stance against transgenderism in such a big way.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announces new parental rights policies that come as a tremendous blow to transgender ideology. Smith, unfortunately, falls into the trap of using problematic language as a compromise. Some policies remain very problematic. The job is not done yet. We must continue to educate our elected officials!

Maureen, I want to share with you something alarming I discovered while researching about our country’s population collapse for the Epoch Times article.
I was searching for a population simulator that would be able to model what would happen to our country over time with today’s fertility rate of 1.33. A fertility rate of 2.1 is needed to keep a population stable. We are well below that level and plummeting.
The Institute for Demographic Studies hosted the exact kind of simulator I was looking for.
The numbers were plugged in. The simulator ran. Here’s what I discovered.
If our fertility rate remained constant at 1.3 instead of continuing its downward plunge, Canada’s 40 million people would be halved by 2093 and halved again by 2137. By 2181, the population would be 5 million.
By 2580, the population would become extinct.
I was shocked by the numbers and by the timeline.

Is all lost for our country?
Here’s what I wrote in the Epoch Times about the solution to this problem.
Saving the West from extinction requires the recovery of two lost values.
First is the recovery of the value of fertility as a sacred gift and a precious treasure. Today’s so-called sex education in schools perverts children, especially females, into viewing their fertility as a threat to their autonomy that must be managed, controlled, and even eliminated by injections, pills, or intrauterine devices. These poison the woman’s body, upsetting her hormonal balance and making her body hostile to growing new life.
These sex-ed programs are anti-life and anti-family. They must be destroyed and replaced by programs that teach children to cherish the power they will have to generate new human life as they enter into adulthood. Children must be taught about the serious responsibility that accompanies the use of the semi-divine power of generating new human life, each instance of which bears the likeness of God. With this great power of generation comes great responsibility. They must be taught that new life flourishes best in the context of an exclusive, committed, and life-long relationship between a man and woman.
Secondly, there must be a recovery of the value of large families. Ancient cultures understood the value of the large family. The fathers of the Judaeo/Christian faith tradition rightly saw it as being blessed by God to have a great nation spring from their loins. Abraham valued and cherished that he would have descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the shore (Genesis 22:17). God’s first command to mankind was to “multiply and fill the earth” (Genesis 1:28). This original command, which remains in effect today, has now become relevant to mankind’s very survival.
Where there is life, there is hope. It’s time to recover the value of life, fertility, and large families.
