              LEGION OF MARY STUDY DAY

MAY 1, 2010 OUTING

On a mild May 1st.  Saturday morning, 35 plus Legionaries gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto at 11 :00 a.m. to pray the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross. After a prayerful hour on these beautiful grounds we proceeded to a basement parish meeting room and ate our bagged lunches.

OUR LADY OF LOURDES GROTTO, VANIER

STUDY SESSION/LUNCHEON

The true purpose of this gathering was to discuss the directive by Concilium to "Get back to Basics through the Study of the Handbook." Each suggested topic was addressed in turn and the thoughtful contributions that were given are as follows:

1. To have a greater presence of our Lady in our lives we should take our Handbook with us to Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Some words just jump off the page.

3. Focus on visitation of praesidia and councils. We should not be aftaid to give loving criticism by pointing out the correct method as stated in the handbook. To allow a fault to continue is to sign a death warrant of a praesidium. All agreed that visitors get more out visiting than those being visited. More is taught by having weak praesidia visit strong praesidia.

2. Be more gentle in our treatment of people and fellow legionaries ... and get to know better the spirit of the Legion it would be helpful to slow down. Don't be in such a hurry to get the meeting finished and run off to our next engagement. Don't pray too fast, read too fast, or talk too fast. Slow down.

4. The best way to renew our zeal and knowledge of our Legion Promise is to study The Theology of the Apostolate by Cardinal Suenens. It is out of print but there still are a few copies around and should be treasured by the Praesidia that have them and shared with those that do not.

5. Restudy the chapter on the weekly meeting as this is where all Legion apostolic action stems ftom.

Conclusion: The Holy Spirit came upon the apostles at Pentecost in the company of Mary. Listen for the voice of Mary that the Holy Spirit will cause Jesus to leap to life in us as in Elizabeth. It is the Holy Spirit with Mary that brings Jesus into the world.

Acies is a Church function which is held annually about the Feast of the Annunciation for the members to renew their consecration to Mary.

Bearing in mind the importance of devotion to Mary in the Legion system, each year there shall be a consecration of legionaries to Our Lady. The consecration - which shall comprise both an individual and a collective consecration - will take place on the 25 March or on a day close thereto, and will be known as the Acies. This Latin word, meaning as it does an army ranged in battle array, is appropriate to a ceremony in which the legionaries as a body assemble to renew their fealty to Mary, Queen of the Legion, and from her to receive strength and blessing for yet another year's battle with the forces of evil. Moreover, the word is in effective contrast with praesidium, which contemplates the Legion, no longer drawn up in united array, but split up into its various sections, each engaged in its own particular sphere of duty.

The Acies is the great central annual function of the Legion, so that it is necessary to stress the importance of attendance on the part of every member. The essential idea of the Legion, upon which all else is built, is that of working in union with and in dependence on Mary, its Queen. The Acies is the solemn expression of that union and dependence, the renewal-individual and collective-of the legionary declaration of fealty. Hence it is manifest that any legionaries who can attend, and yet fail to do so, have little or none of the spirit of the Legion in them. The membership of such persons is not an asset to the Legion
