The Legion Apostolate

WHAT IS THE LAY APOSTOLATE? an exerpt By CANON FRANCIS J. RIPLEY

THE LAITY AS TRUE WITNESSES OF CHRIST

In an important passage the Constitution says that, being incorporated in the Church through baptism, the faithful are consecrated by the baptismal character to the worship of the Christian religion and "reborn as sons of God they must confess before men the faith they have received from God through the Church." The sacrament of confirmation binds them more perfectly to the Church and "the Holy Spirit endows them with special strength so that they are more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith, both by word and by deed, as true witnesses of Christ."

How the Legion of Mary Can Assist the Pastor and The Legion of Mary as a Pastoral Tool

"The parish Legion group is intended to be the extension of the priest, to be at the disposal of the pastor to do spiritual work that needs to be done. "

SIMPLICITY IN THE lEGION BY FRANK DUFF

The best argument is the simple Catholic truth. Let us state that truth and then put it into action through our works. Successful action is the best method of proving that the truth is true. You know the saying that money talks. But a better one is that grace works. Truth plus correct action brings grace.

Below are a few exerpts from The Legion of Mary in the Church Today

by REV. MSGR. THOMAS B. FALLS, S. T. D., Ph.D.

Archdiocesan Director of the Philadelphia Senatus,

Legion of Mary

Pastor Observer at the Second Vatican Council

"The lay apostolate is a participation in the salvific mission of the Church itself.

Evangelization and sanctification. The Council states that the laity "exercise the apostolate by their activity directed to the evangelization and sanctification of men and to the penetrating and perfecting of the temporal order through the spirit of the Gospel." (I, 2)

The Legion of Mary always considered evangelization (i.e., spreading the Gospel of Christ) and sanctification (spreading His graces to others) as the first and most important apostolic work of its members.

The Legion of Mary always insisted that the laity has the duty to preach the Gospel of Christ to all creatures. The Decree says the laity will "witness to Christ throughout the world." (I, 3)

Evangelization by word of mouth. How does the Council want true lay apostles to convey Christ's message and grace to all? By the example of a good Christian life alone? No, but by word of mouth. They must talk of religion to others. "An apostolate of this kind does not consist only in the witness of one's way of life; a true apostle looks for opportunities to announce Christ by words addressed either to non-believers with a view to leading them to faith, or to the faithful with a view to instructing, strengthening, and encouraging them to a more fervent life." (II, 6)

Lay apostles must work against modern errors and vices. In these days, the Council tells us, "The laity must take up the renewal of the temporal order as their own special obligation." (II, 7) They must work vigorously against the many errors men have fallen into concerning the true God, the nature of man, and the principles of the moral law; they must fight against the corruption of morals; and they must try to help those "who having trusted excessively in the progress of the natural sciences and the technical arts, have fallen into an idolatry of temporal things and have become their slaves rather than their masters." (II, 7)

"Pray for the many spiritual and material needs of your families, your communities, the whole Church, and all of humanity.

Indeed, prayer is the first and greatest work of charity that we must do for our brothers and sisters."

Prayer Before Doing Legion Work

Holy Mother of God, Mother of us all,

Help me as I go to the front today as a soldier in your legion.

Keep my attitude towards people as one of infinite sweetness and patience.

Remind me always that I stand before people in your place, doing your work.

Remind me how much you love each of your children.

Let me disappear, and let my voice, my attitude and my thoughts be yours.

In this way, the will of God, who is your Son and my Lord, will be done.

I pray will all my heart for the conversion of the souls that I am about to meet.

Dear Mother, Queen of Peace, Queen of All Graces,
