It was well attended by 170 legionaries from the district.

Following Mass there was a Reception in the Parish hall.

All enjoyed a beautiful shared lunch and a great time was had by all.

The Senatus of Ontario thanks all those who helped make this such a beautiful day!

This joy-filled outing was attended by about 40 faithful souls. We met at the Grotto to pray the  Stations of the Cross and the rosary at approximately 11:00 AM.  Afterwards, we proceeded to the Vanier-Richelieu Community Centre and Museum for lunch and sing songs. The Center is the former Seminary and School for the White Fathers of Africa. Br. Jean Pierre Montminy played the clarinet so we could 'guess that tune'.  Sr. Marilyn Montminy led us in a Legion sing song assisted by her husband, Br. Jean.  All enjoyed themselves very much. The afternoon ended with a beautiful group photo below. Marilyn

Legion of Mary  Handicapped Pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Cape:  took place SEPTEMBER 5, 6 & 7, 2008

This year's Handicapped Pilgrimage to the Marian Shrine at Cap-de-Ia-Madeleine, near Trois Rivieres, Quebec was held from September 5 - 7.

It marked the 36th year that the Our Lady of Light Praesidium, along with the Ontario Senatus has organized this Pilgrimage. The thirty one pilgrims included eleven handicapped, five of whom required wheelchairs or electric scooters and several others who required walkers.

As we mentioned in last year's report, we are using a bus that has an elevator built into it to lift wheelchairs and their occupants from the ground into the bus cabin. Once their occupant is safely seated inside, we then place the wheelchairs in the under-cabin storage which is high enough to hold electric wheelchairs 39 inches tall. Our Lady never loses sight of the details for this pilgrimage, as again this year all of the scooters and wheelchairs, except two, were short enough to enable us to store them below. The bus was equipped to carry the other two wheelchairs and their occupants in the cabin itself.

Again, this year Sr. Essie traveled with us and lead our prayers and singing as we traveled. We want to thank her for her consistent support in spite of her failing health. Once we were at the Cape, Mrs. Rita Burns led us through our program and was available for explanations and assistance if we needed it. Father Paul Sobane, from Lesotho, Africa, conducted all of the Masses and blessed the bus before we departed. We promised to pray for him as he returns to Rome for more of his studies.

 http://www.sanctuaire-ndc.ca/

Despite the rain during the weekend, our program included many opportunities for the Sacrament of Confession, Mass each day, an out-door Rosary and Way of the Cross, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a Healing Mass on Sunday. The rain let up, though, each evening to allow us to participate in the outdoor candlelight processions with prayers and singing, a highlight for everyone who makes these pilgrimages.

As in the recent past, local Councils of the Knights of Columbus, the Archbishop's office, and private donations have provided financial support toward enabling pilgrims, on very limited incomes, to participate in this pilgrimage. This year we had the generous support of several Councils.

As well, a Knight of Columbus from St. Maurice's Parish Council and his wife, a registered nurse, accompanied us. They, and other able-bodied pilgrims, gave generously of their time and physical support to enable our handicapped pilgrims to participate in all of the activities. Throughout the weekend, we noted that everyone attentively cared for each other and pilgrims who were strangers at the beginning of the pilgrimage were, by the time we loaded the bus for the ride home, working together as a team; each looking out for the other.

Next year's Handicapped Pilgrimage is scheduled for September 11 - 13, 2009. We have plans to establish a closer working relationship with the Council of the Knights of Columbus to limit our involvement with the financial details. This, we pray, will enable us to focus more on encouraging more handicapped pilgrims to attend.

We want to thank Senatus members for their prayers and support, but most importantly we need to acknowledge the help that Our Blessed Mother provides for each and every pilgrimage. In short, we just could not do it without her.

Faithfully submitted,

The Legion of Mary’s annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Cape, Cap-de-la-Madeleine, and Ste. Anne de Beaupre, took place over the holiday weekend,  August 2-4, 2008.

LEGION OF MARY PILGRIMAGE 2-4 August 2008

On Saturday 2nd August, three buses carrying 139 pilgrims departed the Ottawa Diocesan Centre en route the Shrines of the Sacred Heart in Montreal, our Lady of the Cape in Trois Rivieres, and to St. Anne de Beaupre in Quebec City. The Legion of Mary pilgrimage, was for the 62nd time, very successful!  I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the bus supervisors, Wayne Smith, Marilyn Halls Montminy and Anne Stewart. The bus supervisors devote untold hours, measured in days, to filling their buses with pilgrims. Without their dedication the annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Cape would not unfold as efficiently as it does. This year there were many last minute changes, mostly due to illnesses and injuries; a little more on this topic later in the report.

The first stop was at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Montreal. We all enjoyed a bag lunch on the grounds of this beautiful location. It was gratifying to see that for those pilgrims who forgot to bring a lunch, they actually had more food placed in front of them than those who did remember to pack a lunch. The Shrine of the Sacred Heart is nestled in the heart of Montreal and yet provides a setting of serenity, peace and beauty. The outdoor Stations of the Cross, the Scala Santa with its magnificent carving of the Last Supper, the Grotto of Lourdes and the Padre-Pio Chapel are just a few of the sacred places to visit on the grounds.

This year, the buses arrived at the Madonna Hotel at Our Lady of the Cape earlier than scheduled but never-the-less Pat, on the reception desk, welcomed us with open arms and made our early arrival seem like a blessing. Father James Dunston was just finishing mass when we arrived and like magic a few minutes later this loving Priest arrived to welcome the Legion of Mary Pilgrims. Even with a full itinerary for the weekend, most pilgrims participated in every activity.

Shortly after our arrival, we participated in Mary’s Way of the Cross which was led by Father James. At the end of the stations, Father suggested that each pilgrim should consider leaving a sin behind at the Cape. I noticed that we took his suggestion very seriously because the line to the confessionals before evening mass was even longer than usual.  Permit me to digress in relating that just before the stations, one of our pilgrims Tony Corrigan, fell ill. Thanks to Peter, a roommate and good friend of Tony, his quick thinking ensured that Tony was taken to hospital by ambulance. Anne Stewart (RN) accompanied Tony in the ambulance.

Following mass on Saturday evening, Father James took the Blessed Sacrament to Tony. Sisters Marilyn and Maureen, Brother Jean, and I had the privilege of joining Father James as he brought the Eucharistic to Tony. As a point of interest, for no apparent reason at the time, Father James was encouraged to bring two additional hosts to the hospital. It was only when Father found sisters Pat McLeod and Anne Steward at Tony’s bedside that he realized God’s plan for the extra hosts.

Saturday evening we experienced the beautiful and sacred candlelight procession at the Cape. At the end of the evening, Father James invited us to join him for what has become a tradition, the ‘question and answer period.’ As pilgrims settled in for the informal talk, questions rolled as quickly and easily as grease on a hot tin roof. Father’s good nature permitted anything and everything on our minds to surface for a long time; then he took us by surprise when he said, “are not most of you members of the Legion of Mary and if so, why are these concerns that seem so pressing not being addressed to your spiritual advisors back at your Praesidia?”  Father then shared that he was a member of the Legion of Mary in his country of Sri Lanka and it was there that he learned that Legionaries are pastors’ greatest allies. Father James went on to tell us that Legionaires assist pastors when they bring concerns, much like the ones he was hearing, to their attention. Father then emphasized that this is why every parish needs to have a Legion of Mary.

This year St. Anne de Beaupre is celebrating its 350th anniversary; we needed all three buses to carry about 130 pilgrims to St. Anne’s, or as Father Desrocher, the director, would say “Good St. Anne.” The spirituality of St. Anne’s was particularly prominent this year. The outdoor landscaping project, including a beautiful fountain, was completed for the International Eucharistic Conference, held in June. However, the best gift for the pilgrims was that Brother Tony was able to join us for the pilgrimage to “Good St. Anne’s.” Did I mention that Brother Tony decided that going to morning mass and then making the trip to St. Anne de Beaupre was more important than being in the hospital, hooked up to all sorts of machines that made strange noises?

Monday, mass was celebrated by Father Oulette, followed by a group photo on the steps of the altar in the old chapel with Our Lady of the Cape smiling down on the pilgrims. After lunch, Jean Normandin, a long-time friend of our Lady of the Cape led us to Trois Rivieres to the church where the body of Blessed Father Frederic is resting. Jean boarded each bus prior to departure from the Cape and told us many interesting facts about Blessed Brother Frederic. We are indebted to Jean for taking his time to accompany the pilgrims to the tomb of Blessed Father Frederic and to share so much information about the life of this holy priest.

The buses arrived back in Ottawa on schedule at 6:30 PM and thus the 62nd annual pilgrimage was completed. I regret to inform you that Brother Tony Corrigan died in Kingston, Ontario on 15th August 2008. On the feast day of our Lady of the Assumption. His funeral was held at St. Maurice’s Parish in Ottawa on 21st August. In memory of Tony, next year’s pilgrimage will be held in his memory.

Legion of Mary, Ottawa Senatus Day of Recollection,  June 14, 2008

Our Lady of Light Praesidium, with help from Our Lady of Fatima Praesidium, organized a Day of Recollection for the Handicapped & Seniors at St. George’s Parish Hall, 415 Piccadilly, Ottawa on Saturday, June 14 from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. During the planning and also though out the entire day the spirit of cooperation was evident as legionaries from several Presidia worked together in perfect harmony.

We would like to express a special thank you to Senatus members who helped us organize this day. Our Lady of Fatima Praesidium members made over one hundred phone calls to persons who had previously attended and also who assisted us during this special day and especially the assistance of Alan Marshall, President of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Praesidium, who had keys to the church hall and was able to open it Friday evening to allow us to set up early for Saturday's activities. Thank you too to Angela Beimers for the wonderful cakes (one chocolate and the other vanilla) that gave an extra special touch to the luncheon served. It was especially nice to have new legionaries in attendance including a probationary member who previously had never attended a Day of Recollection.

The day began with tea and coffee and time for getting reacquainted, since for some handicapped persons this is the only time they see each other during the year. Then, following the Rosary at l0:00 AM, Father Stanley Ambrose, a priest studying at St. Paul's University who is assisting at St. Patrick's Basilica this summer, heard confessions. Holy Mass was celebrated at 11AM. Father also was able to stay for lunch and speak personally with each person who attended this Day of Recollection.

After lunch, a video presentation on the Holy Mass by Cardinal Spellman was shown in the Library of St. George's Parish Hall. This excellent video was from a series that was created by Cardinal Spellman many years ago. 1t’s theme was chosen in consideration of the fact that, at the same we were meeting in Ottawa, the Eucharistic Congress had just begun in Quebec City, Quebec. The Day of Recollection attendees were asked to keep all of the Eucharistic Congress' plans and participants in their prayers. The Day ended with fond goodbyes and promises of prayers for each other as the Para Transpo vans arrived one by one.

One of the men who has attended for several years, noted that this Day is the one of the highlights of his year. He knows that he will be treated as if he were a member of the family rather than just a person who is in a wheelchair and who requires a lot of attention.. He noted that our handicapped attendees know that we fuss over the details and he wanted us to know how much that means to people confined to institutions all year. Again, this year, we were reminded of how fortunate we are to be able bodied, and how suddenly that can change.

Unfortunately, the number of persons attending has been dwindling over the past few years, and those who want to attend are finding it harder and harder either to get permission to attend, to obtain assistance in getting ready in time or to organize reliable transportation. Your prayers are requested regarding these on-going difficulties.

We know that Our Blessed Lady will assist us in finding new ways both to communicate with our handicapped friends and also to work within the system to ensure that those that want to attend, can attend this special Day.

Report on our visit to Sudbury

by the Senatus of Ontario April 18-20,2008

On April 18th,  four members of the Legion of Mary went to Sudbury, Ontario, to attend the Acies at St. Mathieu, and hold a Columban drive after Mass on Saturday evening. A Columban drive was also held on Sunday at Our Lady of Hope Parish after the 9 a.m. Mass. The Acies, held on Saturday, April 19th, 2 PM was attended by 45 Legionaries and was conducted in both English and French, followed by a Mass in French. Fr. Tremblay, the parish priest, is a devoted member of the Legion and promotes it with great passion as he loves Our Blessed Mother very much. A reception was held afterwards with Sr. Marilyn giving a talk. We attended the 7 p.m. French Mass for the Columban drive and handed out rosaries, pamphlets, medals, and literature on the Legion. People were very receptive. Br. John gave a presentation on the benefits of joining the Legion of Mary and encouraged parishioners to give it some thought .. On Sunday we attended the 9 am Mass at Our Lady of Hope Parish. This Mass was well attended and the Columban drive was very successful. The pastor encouraged parishioners to join the Legion as he would like a Praesidium in the parish. He wanted us to stay for the next Mass and do another drive but that will be held in the future by Legionaries who live in Sudbury. Sr. Marilyn gave a talk after Mass and it was well received. Literature, rosaries, medals, and prayer cards were given out and two prospective members signed up. The weekend was a great success and we enjoyed our visit with the legionaries we correspond with and those we met for the first time.  Submitted Sr. Dolly Moyse

ACIES APRIL 6, 2008 AT 2:00 pm ASSUMPTION PARISH

320 OLMSTEAD PARISH VANIER

Throughout the ceremony the "Our Lady Queen of Peace Praesidium" choir provided us with beautiful music beginning with Immaculate Mary and closing with Holy God we Praise Thy Name.

Senatus President, Sister Marilyn welcomed us all and led the opening prayers and rosary.

Father Pedro Arana, Pastor of Assumption, gave the homily.  He recounted a beautiful story of his first experience with Legionaries when he was in the Philippines. They had asked him to visit a dying lady who lived in a mud shanty. She had no family and  no one to care for her except for these members of the Legion of Mary. He felt their efforts were heroic and ever since then he has had tremendous admiration for the legion of Mary.

Father Arana explained this Latin word ACIES, meaning as it does, an army arranged in battle array, and how it is appropriate to a ceremony in which the legionaries as a body assemble to renew their fealty to Mary, Queen of the Legion, and from her to receive strength and blessing for yet another year's battle with the forces of evil. Just as soldiers are completely obedient to their officers and do anything and everything demanded of them, Legionnaires demonstrate total surrender to God and Mary.

We made our individual consecrations after which  Father Anthony Hannon led us in our collective consecration.

After the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament sister Marilyn led us in the concluding prayers and thanked Father Pedro, Father Anthony and Our Lady Queen of Peace Praesidium and invited us for a  reception in the parish hall with great food, singing, and a chance to meet other legionaries.

Thank you Mary

  Father James Whalen (1939-2008)

Condolences from Concilium,  the International Headquarters of the Legion of Mary, Dublin Ireland

Thank you very much for your e-mail although it conveyed very sad news of the death of Fr. Jim Whalen, Spiritual Director of the Senatus. Please convey the condolences of Rev. Fr. Bede McGregor, the Concilium Officers, all the Concilium members and of course of myself and my husband Michael to the family of Fr. Whalen. He was a dedicated priest and committed Spiritual Director of the Senatus and was obviously spreading the gospel message up to the last minute. I am sure Our Blessed Lady welcomed him home. He will be sadly missed by the Legion and his parishioners and I am sure a large number of family, friends and contacts. We will remember him in our prayers and at the March Concilium meeting, I will arrange to have him included in the prayers for the deceased which Fr. Bede reads out each month.

Yours in Jesus and Mary,

The Legion of Mary’s annual pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Cape, Cap-de-la-Madeleine, and Ste. Anne de Beaupre, took place over the holiday weekend,  August 2-4, 2008.

A Columban drive was also held on Sunday at Our Lady of Hope Parish after the 9am Mass. The Acies, held on Saturday April 19th, 2PM was attended by 45 Legionaries and was conducted in  both English and French, followed by a Mass in French. Fr. Tremblay, the parish priest, is a devoted member of the Legion and promotes it with great passion as he loves Our Blessed Mother very much. A reception was held afterwards with Sr. Marilyn giving a talk. We attended the 7pm French Mass for the Columban drive and handed out rosaries, pamphlets, medals and literature on the Legion. People were very receptive. Br. John gave a presentation on the benefits of joining the Legion of Mary and encouraged parishioners to give it some thought .. On Sunday we attended the 9am Mass at Our Lady of Hope Parish. Literature, rosaries, medals and prayer cards were given out and two prospective members signed up.

Senatus President, Sister Marilyn welcomed us all, and led the opening prayers and rosary.

Father Pedro Arana, Pastor of Assumption, gave the homily.  He recounted a beautiful story of his first experience with Legionaries when he was in the Phillipines.

Just as  soldiers are completely obedient to their officers and do anything and everything demanded of them, Legionnairies demonstrate  total surrender to God and Mary.

We made our  individual consecrations after which  Father Anthony Hannon led us in our collective consecration.

After the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament sister Marilyn led us in the concluding prayers and thanked Father Pedro, Father Anthony and Our Lady Queen of Peace Praesidium and invited us for a  reception in the  parish hall with great food, singing and a chance to meet other legionaries.

Thank you Mary

Even with a full itinerary for the weekend most pilgrims participated in every activity.

Shortly after our arrival we participated in Mary’s Way of the Cross which was led by Father James.

The outdoor landscaping project, including a beautiful fountain was completed for the International Eucharistic Conference, held in June. However, the best gift for the pilgrims was that brother Tony was able to join us for the pilgrimage to “Good St. Anne’s.” Did I mention that brother Tony decided that going to morning mass and then making the trip to St. Anne de Beaupre was more important than being in hospital, hooked up to all sorts of machines that made strange noises.

Monday, mass was celebrated by Father Oulette, followed by a group photo on the steps of the altar in the old chapel with Our Lady of the Cape smiling down on the pilgrims. After lunch, Jean Normandin, a long time friend of our Lady of the Cape led us to Trois Rivieres to the church where the body of Blessed Father Frederic is resting. Jean boarded each bus prior to departure from the Cape and told us many interesting facts about Blessed Brother Frederic. We are indebted to Jean for taking his time to accompany the pilgrims to the tomb of Blessed Father Ferderic and to share so much information about the life of this holy priest.

The buses arrived back in Ottawa on schedule at 6:30 PM and thus the 62nd annual pilgrimage was completed. I regret to inform that Brother Tony Corrigan died in Kingston, Ontario on 15th August 2008. On the feast day of our Lady of the Assumption. His funeral was held at St. Maurice’s Parish in Ottawa on 21st August. In memory of Tony, next year’s pilgrimage will be held in his memory.

Respectfully submitted,

Jennifer Snell,
