Proverbs 14:1-35
1 The wise woman builds her house,
but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.
2 Whoever fears the Lord walks uprightly,
but those who despise him are devious in their ways.
3 A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride,
but the lips of the wise protect them.
4 Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty,
but from the strength of an ox come abundant harvests.
5 An honest witness does not deceive,
but a false witness pours out lies.
6 The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none,
but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.
7 Stay away from a fool,
for you will not find knowledge on their lips.
8 The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
but the folly of fools is deception.
9 Fools mock at making amends for sin,
but goodwill is found among the upright.
10 Each heart knows its own bitterness,
and no one else can share its joy.
11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the upright will flourish.
12 There is a way that appears to be right,
but in the end it leads to death.
13 Even in laughter the heart may ache,
and rejoicing may end in grief.
14 The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways,
and the good rewarded for theirs.
15 The simple believe anything,
but the prudent give thought to their steps.
16 The wise fear the Lord and shun evil,
but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.
17 A quick-tempered person does foolish things,
and the one who devises evil schemes is hated.
18 The simple inherit folly,
but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
19 Evildoers will bow down in the presence of the good,
and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
20 The poor are shunned even by their neighbors,
but the rich have many friends.
21 It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor,
but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.
22 Do not those who plot evil go astray?
But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.
23 All hard work brings a profit,
but mere talk leads only to poverty.
24 The wealth of the wise is their crown,
but the folly of fools yields folly.
25 A truthful witness saves lives,
but a false witness is deceitful.
26 Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress,
and for their children it will be a refuge.
27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,
turning a person from the snares of death.
28 A large population is a king’s glory,
but without subjects a prince is ruined.
29 Whoever is patient has great understanding,
but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.
30 A heart at peace gives life to the body,
but envy rots the bones.
31 Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,
but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.
33 Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning
and even among fools she lets herself be known.
34 Righteousness exalts a nation,
but sin condemns any people.
35 A king delights in a wise servant,
but a shameful servant arouses his fury.
The fourteenth chapter of Proverbs serves as a divine manual for the "Doer," teaching us that wisdom is not merely a thought, but a life built by hand...It begins by showing that the wise woman builds her house while the foolish tears hers down, illustrating that our daily actions determine our stability...The chapter warns us against the "mere talk" that leads to poverty, reminding us that all hard work brings a profit (v. 23)...It highlights that where there are no oxen, the manger is empty—reminding us that the "mess" of hard work is what produces an abundant harvest (v. 4)...In the midst of life's bitterness and the heartache that can hide behind laughter, Proverbs 14 points us toward a "secure fortress" and a "fountain of life" found in the fear of the LORD (v. 26-27)...It tells us that a heart at peace gives life to the body, a peace that is often found when we stop being "hotheaded" or "simple" and instead become prudent, giving thought to our steps and our labor (v. 15, 30)...By highlighting these truths, we see that our desire to work and stay active is actually a reflection of the Father's Own Nature... By placing an importance on work, we see that "the holiness of work" isn't just a human idea—it is a Divine Command...We see the Divine Pattern of Work when we follow the Father and the Son...
There are over 20 verses in the book of Proverbs specifically dedicated to the value of work, diligence, and the dangers of idleness...These verses treat labor not as a burden, but as a "physicality of grace" that protects the mind, strengthens the body, and honors the Creator...Work and staying active shows work acts as a divine maintenance system for our total well-being...God is our Architect and shows us work and how work heals the Soul...
The wisdom of the Proverbs makes a startlingly clear distinction between the "Doer" and the "Lackey"...It teaches us that work is a primary tool God uses to keep us active, healthy, and wise...In Proverbs 12:24, we are told that "the hand of the diligent will rule," while the lazy will be put to forced labor...This "ruling" is not just about worldly success; it is about ruling over our own internal world...For those of us who have walked through the "far country" of grief or the shadows of a difficult, argumentative and disruptive upbringing, work can be a sanctuary where we regain dominion over our thoughts...It is the "Sabbath rest" for a mind that would otherwise be caught in the "negative self-talk" of the one's inner courtroom...
Work is something physical and helps our health and there is a rhythm in labor...Proverbs 13:4 reminds us that "the soul of the diligent is richly supplied"...This supply is not just spiritual—it is physical...There is a "Logos" in the rhythm of manual labor; when we measure, build, and fix, we are engaging in a process that keeps the body resilient...As we know from John 5:17, the Father is always working, and Jesus is too...By staying active, we align our physical health with the Divine Pattern...For a man managing a chronic situation like grief or trauma, the "mundane" tasks and keeping busy throughout the day are actually a healing medicine...Work prevents the "apathy" of the heart by forcing us into the present moment...Work requires a "Ministry of Presence" with the task at hand, ensuring that our strength is renewed even as we spend it...
We can find wisdom doing and keeping busy...Work is the classroom of wisdom...Proverbs 14:23 states, "All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty"...The "non-doer" often talks about what could happen, but the Doer learns through the actual doing...This practical wisdom—knowing how to navigate the specific hurdles of a project—builds a fortress of stability in the mind...The different work projects we take on gives us more knowledge about how to repair and fix different things...When we are faced with the weight of our problems, we don't just sit and analyze them; we turn and first pray to our Father and learn from the "Eternal Architect" and get to work...This process thaws the emotions and sharpens the intellect...It proves that we are standing on the Rock of Matthew 7, building a life that the rains and winds of trouble cannot wash away...
Work can provide a solace of a productive Soul...Ultimately, the holiness of work lies in its ability to connect us back to the Great Designer...Work was a gift in Eden before the fall, and it remains a gift today...It is our "Letter" to God, showing Him that we trust the "good works" He prepared in advance for us...Whether we are fixing a window, painting a dumpster, managing a property, or supporting a friend through loss, we are practicing the "Way, the Truth, and the Life"...We are proving that while the past is real, it does not have the final word...The final word belongs to the Savior who was a working Carpenter...
As the Doer closes the day, they find a peace that "mere talkers" never know...They can feel and think something has been accomplished...Their sleep is sweet because their hands have been an extension of God’s Grace...In every hammer swing, mowing, painting, and every calculated measurement, there is a whisper of the Spirit: "You are home, you are whole, and you are His"...By staying active in the work God has provided, we find that our souls are not just busy—they are being restored...
