Luke 18:9-14
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
James 4:4-10
God Opposes the Proud, but Shows Favor to the Humble
4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Proverbs 3:34
God Shows Favor to the Humble and Oppressed
34 He mocks proud mockers
but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
Philippians 2:1-4
Pride and Humility
1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Scripture makes it clear what God thinks about pride...Those who are not proud count on other people...Those who are humble show a lot of interest in others and look less to their own self interests...
St. James wrote that God opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble...And there is a proverb that tells us that God mocks the proud, but shows favor the the humble and oppressed...St. Paul wrote that we should do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit... Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others...
And Jesus tells us that God will exalt those who are humble, and those who exalt themselves will be humbled...
