Proverbs 4:23
Guard Your Heart
23 Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.
John 4:4-15
The Living Water
4Now he had to go through Samaria. 5So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" 8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
9The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."
11"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
13Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
15The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."
Solomon tells us to guard our heart, because it is the wellspring of life...He believed that the heart stored many of the things we see as sacred...It is a gate where good or evil can enter...It is the source of our intelligence and the place we make the major decisions in our lives...
The heart must be guarded...Evil can enter it...Also day after day in life can become routine...Our heart can get into a rut, if we let it...When we get up, to our same routine, do the same things everyday we in a sense get wired and into a way of thinking that is hard to get out of...We must keep watch on our hearts from doing bad, and going bad...And like a spring of water and its source can be lost and go bad, our heart can go bad, if we do not watch it...We must find the One who makes all things new...
When we know the gift of God, and believe in His Son, and ask Him, He will give us the living water...And everyone who drinks from this water will never be thirsty again, and whoever drinks this living water that Jesus gives will never thirst again...Indeed the living water He gives us will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life..
Starting and ending your day with Scripture is good for the heart and good for you...We want our wellspring of life to be this good...We find Jesus in Scripture and in church...Scripture helps guard the gate and our hearts...
Trust in your heart...Listen to it...Above all, guard your heart...Guard your heart with faith, goodness, knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and above all, love...St. Peter teaches us that these qualities will keep us effective and productive in our LORD Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:5-8)...Give your heart what it needs...Our hearts need the Living Water...That is what our heart thirsts the most...We should seek our LORD Jesus, the Living Water, and when we find Him, the Water will become a spring of water welling up in us to bring us eternal life...
