Proverbs 6:16-19
Six Things
16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
Solomon, in Proverbs, writes about sins that God hates and things that are detestable to Him...This list is specific but not a complete list...For instance, in the next verses twenty through thirty five, Solomon writes about the sin of adultery...
First on the proverb list is pride...God hates pride...He wants us to humble ourselves and not to have haughty eyes...Jesus teaches us to get rid of our pride, help others, and tells us the meek shall inherit the earth....
God does not want us to lie and have a lying tongue...Plain and simple we should tell the truth and try to keep lies out of our lives...
God in the Ten Commandments, lists as one of our commandments is "Thou shall not murder"...We should not shed innocent blood...
We should not work, devise, or be evil...There is evil out there doing work everyday...We must guard against it, and not be taken in by it and rush into it...Step back think when you are in these situations, pray, and stay away from evil...
We again should not lie...We should not bear false witness, against our neighbor...One of our Ten Commandments is thou shall not give false testimony against our neighbor...
God does not want us to stir and brew trouble...Let things settle down when there is trouble...Jesus teaches us in the LORD's prayer, to pray not to be led into temptation...Stay away from temptation, evil, and adding to situations that can cause dissension among others...
In the next several verses, Solomon talks about the evil of adultery, and gives several warnings against this sin...
Although there are many other sins, including at the start of Proverbs chapter six, God wants us to be like an ant and not like a sluggard to work hard...Being disciplined and gathering and storing for a time when things might become scarce...Discipline is a character trait that the ant shows and the author tells us we need that trait also...While we are at work and away from idleness we are less likely to be worried about the scarcity of things and our personal needs and wants...
Proverbs offers good advice on many things...Listing these sins reminds us to be diligent around these thoughts and ways...Proverbs offers us a good way to review things we take for granted everyday...
