Proverbs 30:1-33
Sayings of Agur
1 The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance.
This man’s utterance to Ithiel:
“I am weary, God,
but I can prevail.
2 Surely I am only a brute, not a man;
I do not have human understanding.
3 I have not learned wisdom,
nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.
4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Whose hands have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is the name of his son?
Surely you know!
5 “Every word of God is flawless;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Do not add to his words,
or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
7 “Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.
10 “Do not slander a servant to their master,
or they will curse you, and you will pay for it.
11 “There are those who curse their fathers
and do not bless their mothers;
12 those who are pure in their own eyes
and yet are not cleansed of their filth;
13 those whose eyes are ever so haughty,
whose glances are so disdainful;
14 those whose teeth are swords
and whose jaws are set with knives
to devour the poor from the earth
and the needy from among mankind.
15 “The leech has two daughters.
‘Give! Give!’ they cry.
“There are three things that are never satisfied,
four that never say, ‘Enough!’:
16 the grave, the barren womb,
land, which is never satisfied with water,
and fire, which never says, ‘Enough!’
17 “The eye that mocks a father,
that scorns an aged mother,
will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley,
will be eaten by the vultures.
18 “There are three things that are too amazing for me,
four that I do not understand:
19 the way of an eagle in the sky,
the way of a snake on a rock,
the way of a ship on the high seas,
and the way of a man with a young woman.
20 “This is the way of an adulterous woman:
She eats and wipes her mouth
and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong.’
21 “Under three things the earth trembles,
under four it cannot bear up:
22 a servant who becomes king,
a godless fool who gets plenty to eat,
23 a contemptible woman who gets married,
and a servant who displaces her mistress.
24 “Four things on earth are small,
yet they are extremely wise:
25 Ants are creatures of little strength,
yet they store up their food in the summer;
26 hyraxes are creatures of little power,
yet they make their home in the crags;
27 locusts have no king,
yet they advance together in ranks;
28 a lizard can be caught with the hand,
yet it is found in kings’ palaces.
29 “There are three things that are stately in their stride,
four that move with stately bearing:
30 a lion, mighty among beasts,
who retreats before nothing;
31 a strutting rooster, a he-goat,
and a king secure against revolt.
32 “If you play the fool and exalt yourself,
or if you plan evil,
clap your hand over your mouth!
33 For as churning cream produces butter,
and as twisting the nose produces blood,
so stirring up anger produces strife.”
Isaiah 9:6-7
A Child Will be Born and a Son will be Given
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
Luke 1:35
Jesus -Son of God
35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
Matthew 16:15-16
Peter Says Jesus is the Son of God
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 27:38-44
Others Know Jesus as the Son of God
38 Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
Mark 14:61-65
Jesus Says He is the Son of God
61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
John 10:24-36
The Father and His Son are One
24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”
25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”
33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’? 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside— 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?
Jesus is known as the Son of God...And others knew about God's Son or God having a Son, long before He came down from heaven to be born in Bethlehem...In the midst of the teachings of Agur we read something interesting that refers very much to the New Testament and the gospels, that hasn't even been written yet...Agur says he has not learned wisdom, nor has he attained to the knowledge of the Holy One...Then Agur asks, "Who has gone up to heaven and come down?...Whose hands have gathered up the wind?...Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?...Who has established all the ends of the earth?...What is His name, and what is the name of His Son?...Surely you know!"...
And the Prophet Isaiah writes that for to us a child will be born, and to us a Son will be given, and the government will be on His shoulders...And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace...This Son will be called not only the Son of God, but Mighty God...Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end for Him...This Child will reign on David’s throne and over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it, like no other, with justice and righteousness from the time He is born and to forever...The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this...
Agur is telling us that God has a Son...And His Son has a name...Isaiah writes about this too...That we would be given a Son, a Child...A Son from the LORD Almighty Himself...The Old Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament written long before the New Testament says God has a Son...The Proverbs and Isaiah declare this...There has been this One who has gone up to heaven and come down to earth...And He would called by many names including, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace -and the Son of God...We see in the ancient scriptures there were people who were inspired by God, and they knew He would have a Son that would come to us, and be with us, and dwell among us...
Each of the four Gospels claim that Jesus is the Son of God, starting before His birth in Bethlehem...So before Jesus' birth to His earthly death, He is and was called the Son of God...St. Luke writes that before Jesus was born the angel Gabriel told Mary that, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you...So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God."...St. Matthew writes, that when Jesus ask His Disciples who He was, Simon Peter said this, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.”...And St. Mark writes many years later when Jesus is on trial and His life is coming to an end, the high priest asks Him if He is, in fact, the Son of the Blessed One and Jesus answers, "I AM."...And the high priest tore his clothes after hearing His answer...And as He was being crucified, someone told Him, if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross...And then Matthew also writes He trusts in God...Let God rescue Him now if he wants Him, for He said, ‘I AM the Son of God.’”...And St. John would later write, that Jesus was set apart from other men and women...So as we see His life so uniquely different from the other teachers, what can we say about the One whom the Father, God did set apart as His very Own and sent into the world to dwell with us?...Why would the Jews accuse Him of blasphemy because He said, ‘I AM God’s Son?...After all it is being said at different times by others and by Him, either directly or indirectly...
When someone and others declare someone to be the Son of God, we must look at that Person very carefully and decide on our own...How do we decide?...Why is Jesus this Special One to whom the Word of God came—and that Scripture tells us that He is the Messiah and the Son of God...Can we set Scripture aside and ignore Him?...Jesus never was overtly forthright in coming out and telling us He is the Son of God over and over...He did it more in an indirect fashion than a direct way...Even when Peter came to the conclusion that Jesus was the Son of God, He wanted Peter to draw his own conclusion on his belief in Him...When other people were around Him, He also took this approach of each of us to draw our own conclusion about Him...When many Jews were gathered around Him one day, they point blank ask Him, "How long will You keep us in suspense?...If You are the Christ, tell us plainly."...Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe...The miracles I do in My Father's name speak for Me, but you do not believe because you are not My sheep...My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me...I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand...My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of My Father's hand...I and the Father are one."...
The Son of God and His Father are One...A Son who did miracles in His Father's name...A Son who says He can give eternal life...Jesus taught and lived with some unusual type of authority around Him -and said these things...And He healed many sick, lame, and blind people...He died on a cross and then His Father resurrected Him from His death...Let us all come to the conclusion through what Jesus said, and did, through His teachings, His miracles, and His life that He is the Son of God...The Divine Son of God...
