Proverbs 20:22
Wait For the LORD's Justice
22 Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!”
Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.
Proverbs 20:22 is a verse that teaches us patience and discourages revenge..."Do not say, 'I'll pay you back for this wrong!'": This part advises against seeking revenge yourself...It discourages responding to a wrong with another wrong...A wrong done after another wrong does not turn into a right...Two wrongs do not make a right...Instead we are taught to: "Wait for the LORD, and He will avenge you"...The second part of this Scripture encourages trusting in God to handle the situation perfectly...It suggests that God will bring Perfect Justice in His Own time...
The message teaches us to be patient...We read much about the power of patience and learning to wait upon the LORD...So instead of acting impulsively out of anger, the proverb encourages waiting for God to act...We are to trust in God's Justice...It emphasizes that God sees everything and will ultimately bring justice to those who have been wronged...We are to avoid seeking revenge...The proverb discourages taking revenge into your own hands...It suggests that revenge can lead to a cycle of violence and negativity...
Some believe that the verse suggest that "waiting for the LORD" doesn't necessarily mean passive inaction...It could involve taking appropriate legal or social action while trusting in God's Ultimate Justice, which will be the proper judgement...
And this is a universal message...While the proverb comes from King Solomon's wisdom, which was inspired by God, the message of avoiding revenge and trusting in a Higher Power for justice can resonate with people of various beliefs...This proverb offers guidance on navigating conflict and dealing with injustice...It encourages us to focus on healing and trust in a greater power to bring about resolution...
