Mutation
This mutation is not hereditary and occurs randomly through breeding.
Melanism is a random mutation that alters the pigment development of the fawn born with it. Melanism effects the animal's entire body, causing an excess of pigment and blocking the expression of white markings.
Melanism effects the Rukaan's entire body and darkens the coat to a dark brown or black hue. Melanism allows softly lightened areas to appear on the design regardless of whether or not the Rukaan has Pangare. These lightened areas can be a lighter version of the Melanistic color OR can display a darker version of the original base coat color. It should never appear white, but can become a grey/dark silver color on white base coats.
Melanistic + Elkan Marks (Far Left) | Melanistic + Fawn (Mid Left) | Melanistic + Splash Accents [note: splash accents shown are white marking type splash accents which should not be visible on a melanistic Rukaan] (Mid Right) | Melanistic + Pangare and Black Accents (Far Right).
Melanistic Rukaan will be darkened to a dark brown or black hue.
This mutation darkens the skin and flesh to a dark grey or black. See the flesh color guide.
The Rukaan's eyes will be dark grey or brown.
Effect on Metal and Gemstone elements: None
Effect on Ancient element: Causes dark grey or brown hooves and antlers. See elements guide.
White Markings are suppressed and will not be visible on a melanistic Rukaan. These markings will appear in the phenotype of a melanistic Rukaan, and may be inherited and passed down, but will not be visible on the melanistic Rukaan's design.

Splash Accents [white marking expression]
Non-White Markings are visible on melanistic Rukaan. These should be muted and close in color to the base coat but still follow their guides rules for remaining lighter or darker than what they sit above.
Tint can affect white markings on a melanistic Rukaan, making them visible. However, tinted white markings will be affected like Non-White Markings by melanism. Tint affecting white markings cannot display the gradient "fade" effect of tint, as the untinted white marking would not be visible on the melanistic Rukaan.
Melanism occurs in many hoofed species.
