Despite their generally peaceful natures, Rukaan have a long and storied history as powerful battle steeds and defenders of their sacred places. Battles are an activity which may be used to prove their superiority against a rival, defeat an enemy or simply settle a bet between friends.
Battle results are rolled based on mechanics explained below. The winner of the battle takes away the listed prizes, and the loser takes away nothing.
Art entries must be full body, colored, and have a complex background. Shading is optional. The opponent must also be included full body. Battle opponents do not count as background elements.
Literature must be at least 800 words for one Rukaan and the opponent must be significantly included in the story. If it is a collaboration with two Rukaan, there must be 1200 words total.
One player Rukaan per entry for NPC and Boss battles.
Two player Rukaan per entry for PvP battles.
PvP battle entries must be collaborations between the owners (one Rukaan per collaborator, two Rukaan from two owners).
Boss battle entries must be made by the Rukaan's owner.
No “sheets”; one battle entry per submission.
The setting for some battles may be specified as Wilderness, Civilization or Arena. You may choose how to depict these, but general descriptions are found below.
Battles will be marked for Wild or Tame or both. Only Rukaan of the specified disposition may challenge these opponents.
The Rukaan and their opponent must be pictured.
Riders must be depicted for NPC opponents who are described as having riders.
Wild Rukaan should be shown fighting or facing down their opponent.
Tame Rukaan facing an opponent in the Arena or in Civilization should have an armed rider facing their opponent in combat. Traditional mounted combat weapons include swords, lances, maces or short spears. Most are used in combination with a shield.
Tame Rukaan facing an opponent in the Wilderness are encourage but not required to have a rider.
Rukaan which are not entering the battle can be included in the piece for rune marks only. A maximum of five Rukaan can be rolled for rune marks per submission.
Leasing is not allowed.
Some battle opponents drop breeding slots as a reward (see individual opponents for the rewards they drop). These slots do not have to be used with the Rukaan who won the battle and can be sold or traded to other players.
If you do not wish to receive breeding slot rewards, you can opt to receive kroner instead of a breeding permission (250 kroner for NPC battles, 500 kroner for boss battles). To opt out, include the "Opt out of breeding slot: Yes" field in your battle submission form.
Battles come in two locations (Arena and Wilderness) and four types (NPC, PvP, Boss and Other ARPG).
You can find your Rukaan’s bonuses in the Battle Mechanics section to calculate where they might struggle and where they might find easy victory. You can use the calculations in the section below, or use the Battle Preview Tool.
Prizes are awarded for wins only, but losses can be used for the experience bonus in future battles and as always will award you rune marks.
The handler of a tame Rukaan might make a formal challenge to a friend or stranger in the Grand Arena in the city of Merilian. There is an audience for these bouts and judges are present to make sure proper conduct is followed and no one is seriously injured.
Player and opponent Rukaan fighting in the arena must have a rider.
Examples of the Grand Arena and Merilian-style architecture are pictured here. Entries do not have to look exactly like the Grand Arena pictured here but they should be set in an arena with a similar architectural style to what is shown.
Tame Rukaan and their handlers may find threats or rivals to challenge in civilization. These fights can have a judge and an audience or may be an informal skirmish.
Player and opponent Rukaan fighting in civilization must have a rider.
Civilization includes locations with signs of human habitation: fences, outdoor arenas, roads, buildings, etc. Examples are shown here, but entries are not limited to these areas.
Tame and Wild Rukaan alike may find threats or rivals to challenge in the wilderness. These fights are totally unsupervised and there are no rules. You are free to fight to the death! (Story only: No Rukaan will be killed or injured unless the owner chooses to do so.)
Riders are not required for the player Rukaan for battles taking place in the wilderness. Riders are required for opponent Rukaan if a rider is mentioned in their description.
Rukaan may be pictured in any outdoors location unless specified otherwise. Examples are shown here, but entries are not limited to these areas.
Battles come in four types:
Rukaan versus a Non-Player Character (NPC)
Rukaan vs Boss (higher difficulty NPC that must be unlocked and have additional requirements)
Rukaan vs Rukaan (player versus player; PvP)
Rukaan vs Other ARPG (character from another ARPG group which rolls fights)
Each Rukaan in a battle is rolled a randomly generated number (starting at 1-10 but increased by factors listed below). Their opponents are rolled a random number in the base roll range listed in their description in the previous section. The party who rolls the higher number wins!
The Rukaan's roll is positively impacted by stats, traits, training, experience, herd bonus, companions and armor. For a detailed description of how battle outcomes are determined and what bonuses affect the likelihood of a battle win, please read Battle Mechanics.
If you aren’t interested in the math, you can enter your Rukaan and their opponent into the handy dandy battle preview tool to estimate your chances.
There are some bonuses that offer a bonus to battle rewards rather than affecting the battle outcome:
Arctic Fox Companion - Drops 100 to 500 kroner in battles when the Rukaan loses
Bounty Hunter Profession - They gain a 5-15% chance to drop 100-500 kroner in each winning battle.
Mercenary Aptitude - They gain a 5-15% chance to drop a random skull or pelt in a winning battle.
Freyja’s Delight Non-Heritable Trait - When winning NPC and Boss battles, this Rukaan has a chance to win a love rune or guaranteed successful breeding in addition to the normal battle reward. In winning NPC and Boss battles against a Rukaan NPC who does not drop a breeding slot as a battle reward, they have a chance to win a Cup of the Contemporaries in addition to the normal battle reward.
