gonna do some writing and I have a degree in English and I have a degree in creative writing so reading and writing are my two favorite things to do so um were going to kind of take a break weve been doing a lot of academic writing and today were going to kind of build on what we worked on last week if you took this class last week if you didnt thats okay um youll catch up so we are going to be working on what is called a descriptive essay is everybody familiar with Google Drive and how to make it work if you look to the left if you look to your left youll see that theres a link that says Google Drive and I have uploaded all screenshare Ive uploaded a document um lets see there we go Ive uploaded a document from there this is from last week this is what students worked on last week and were going to be working on something similar um this week so a descriptive essay a descriptive essay is exactly what it sounds like its where you are describing something and generally what the kind of tense were going to use is Im the simple past tense so um let me first screen share with you this is from last week as well well thats really big um we were talking last week about this idea of a dominant impression a dominant impression is basically the how you would describe somebody so for example um a lot of people when they describe me they say Im very outgoing so that is my dominant impression that I am a very outgoing person writing essays help some people might be described as ambitious some people might be described as selfish they dominant impressions can be either positive or negative I generally would like to try to keep this a positive classroom so were gonna hopefully concentrate on positive dominant impressions um and we also talked about from last week and I know Im going through this kind of quickly but I just want a lot of time for us to work on our writing we went through these ideas of so we have the dominant impression of my brother is ambitious and we have these five different statements and we would pick we pick two that did not match that did not actually support what you would say they did not support the dominant impression so for example he likes to watch the latest news on television thats really nice that means he likes to keep up on current events but that doesnt support the fact that hes ambitious also the fact that he takes a trip to Switzerland every year well thats awesome that he likes to travel but it does not support that someone is ambitious so basically these when youre doing your writing today on a descript on for your descriptive essay theres a kind of a format that I would like you to follow and um so to begin with something that we generally have never done before in my writing classes is pay attention to a title today thats gonna change so the very first thing when youre doing your essay is we need a title now the title needs hey let me fix it the title needs writing essays helpto be in the center so it needs to be centered in the center of your of the page um you also are going to need to put obviously your names so by and your name here okay so this is kind of at the beginning of the setup for how I want you when we get into the writing how I want you to do how I want you to structure this you are also going to have your first paragraph which is an introduction and who can tell me what comes in the last sentence of an introduction I think I think its topic sentence no no this is a statement bingo yeah a thesis statement mm-hmm were actually were getting to the topic sentence youre very close so we need a thesis statement so for example in what we were just looking at with my brother is ambitious that could be your thesis statement on to pit you know depending on who youre describing if youre describing you you can say you know I am a very generous person now where the topic sentences come in is youre going to need a supporting paragraph and Im gonna abbreviate two lines with it kind of
