points to a sermon all right then we have our first body paragraph and here we simply start by announcing topic one because weve mentioned that we have three arguments so heres the first one topic one this is also called your topic sentence the first sentence of your paragraph and it very broadly summarizes what youre going to talk about some of this is good of course and well come back to this in the next movie where we talk about organic structure because you do need a general sentence to kind of say what youre going to talk about but you can see that this is quite rigid so far then we kind as we go through this each paragraph is going to have a very similar structure then so paragraph two is simply topic number two then we have topic number three and the same structure keeps repeating good is that we have a really clear sense of structure and even when you write more organically which is what were going to teach you after this you still need to have a sense of kind of internal structure your paragraphs have to zoom-in more they have to announce whats coming up you have to have a thesis okay all of these things are good but the five paragraph model just does it too rigidly and so whats bad about this is the rigidity too rigid always following exactly the same pattern another thing thats problematic about this is why do we have three points well how to write an essay they get too big another question to ask is how are these points connected whats the relationship between them because what tends to happen is that you have your thesis right theres your thesis and then you have three points so three points and they all have some bearing on the thesis theyre sort of related back to the main point but they have nothing to do with each other theres no internal
