skiing into that stem specialty perhaps you want to engineer some new skiing tech or a way of getting down the mountain quicker if youre really starting from scratch consider if theres an area that you have a special interest or a passion for and then seek to develop your involvement in that area to the furthest degree thats possible seek out relevant clubs at your school summer internships so in general most students apply to between seven and ten colleges that number seven to 10 is a good number to aim for assuming that the applications you cement do represent a broad variety of colleges usually you want to apply to two to three safety schools three to how to write a comparing and contrasting essay four target schools and two to three reach schools a safety school is a school that you are likely to get into it generally means that your statistics place you in the top 25% of admitted students from the past year at that school a target school is a college that you have a reasonable chance of getting into your statistics might place you in the mid-50s percentile of admitted students and then finally a reach school is one that youre not likely to get into this includes all highly selective colleges no matter what type of student you are and any colleges at which your particular statistics place you in the bottom 25% of admitted students to learn more about all of these terms and to determine whether a specific school is a safety a target or a reach school for your statistics check out our post the college list decoded safety target and reach schools thats also linked in the comments below this video of course just because the average student applies seven to ten colleges doesnt mean that you have to apply it to seven to ten colleges there are sometimes other factors that will impact your ideal number of applications you should consider applying to more than seven to ten colleges if you are absolutely set on going to a very highly selective school like an Ivy League school are similar at top colleges the acceptance rates now decline well into the single digits and so that means that these schools receive far far more qualified applicants and theyre actually able to admit in each years class in order tohow to write a comparing and contrasting essayfurther thin the pool of admitted students many other factors are considered by the admissions committee and you will not know in advance which other factors are being the most heavily laid in your application further these factors will not be the same from one highly selective college to the next for example at Harvard they might be looking to build out their pool of international students or their incoming engineering majors at Stanford they might be looking to replace the kicker on the football team or to admit more students that are interested in the Performing Arts you just never really know what exact specialties will matter at these top schools in a particular year and so applying to more schools is often a good strategy if you really want to go to one of these highly selective colleges so then the next question might be how many colleges is too many colleges when it comes to applications well if youre set on attending a particularly selective college and you are available for the cost and time commitment of more applications applying to more than ten schools might be worthwhile but wed recommend that no one quite ooh morehow to write a comparing and contrasting essay
