quick google search if its a yes-or-no question meaning that you can answer the question with a yes or no or you can literally google it and find the answer then thats not a research question a research question takes a little bit of time to find the answer a little bit of soul-searching a little bit of research right so heres my example my topic is gummy bears again loving the gummies and so a research question I could have is how can gummy bears be used to help children take their medicine and this is probably a research question from a couple of years ago and now we have gummy vitamins right we have gummy gummies that you could take for medicine if you wanted to have another research question why are gummies so addictive that is intra that would be an interesting topic to get to thankfully candy is not a subject so you cannot use that but learning how to work the research question is very important it helps you out so how youre going to do this youre either youre going to use one of the five Ws or hs right so who what when where why and how you can use any of these words here at the beginning part of your sentence to create your question so if you were to say is mental illness a problem in the United States that is not a research question because it could be a yes or no answer right yes its a problem in the United States or no its not a problem in the United States so instead of doing that you want to say why is it a problem along these lines writing paragraphs and essays in the United States maybe using why or when did it become a problem or who suffers from mental illness the most and why how is mental illness treated in the mainstream or how is mental illness how has mental illness treated in communities of color and how does that impact them you know so those are big ended questions and that could possibly find a solution for I have an asterisk for why because you can use Y to further investigate so going back to one of my example saying how does mental illness impact communities of color you can do some research and youll probably find in your research that it doesnt impact them positively and then the follow-up question is why why does it not impact them positively why whats going on there and then youll probably do some more research and find something say youll find something attitudes on mental illness illness and communities of color are negative and are not seen as real illness and so thats the beginning part of what youre trying to find a solution how to make mental illness in and communities of color more of an actual illness how do you get them more where or how do you explain that to me use of color so that they understand whats going on so see how that works like just by adding why because sometimes youll have a question like a how question or when question or a who or what question and it starts your your research and your digging and then youll get to the point where youre asking well why is this why does along these lines writing paragraphs and essaysthis impact this community this way why what is better interfere less players like this why does this happen here why does that happen there and that why can lead you to oh this is a problem and theres a problem thats what you want to start finding solutions for again this its not going to take this is not going to be something you can do like the day before something or those papers do this is something you have to be doing for a little bit okay so I have another example here and Im using mental illness because its first on the list so lets say mental illness is your subject and you have the topic of mental illness in college students right college students and mental illness and maybe you have a research question and maybe you start asking what can college campuses do to help students with mental illness or how can college campuses increase awareness of mental illness on campuses right so you want to have those type of questions which starts where you where you start investigating now Im gonna say this youre gonna want to do a thesis at some point but right now dont think about oh I have to find information for a thesis you really
