Arizona, Hempstead, Wisconsin, Dallas, Los Angeles, Indiana, California, Fort Worth, Honolulu, San Jose, Hawaii, KS, Colorado, Tulsa, AL, Minnesota, ID, Virginia Beach, Oklahoma City, Arkansas, Charlotte, Montana, Denver, MD, Rhode Island, Vermont, Utah, Texas, Phoenix, Alabama, SD, ME, Michigan, Jacksonville, TN, Nebraska, Hawaii, Alaska, WYWI, Texas, KY, Albuquerque, Nevada, Portland, Oklahoma, District of Columbia, Georgia, New Hampshire, New Orleans, Oklahoma, Long Beach, UT, Detroit, New Jersey, PA, Indiana, writing college admission essays topics controversial topics and personal experience topics from deep focused and multi perspective avenues so theyll get a chance to look at the topic so theyll get a chance to write about it the final project for that class is called the collage its a really fun piece of writing that Im sure theyve never done before so to be pretty exciting for them the last class is called essay prep research and citation this is just what it says were gonna teach your kids the skills of researching finding credible sources quickly on the internet or in person in in personally in in local research its also going to give them the opportunity to learn how to cite expert sources in their writing to avoid plagiarism and to use those sources to back up their own arguments so those are our three classes its the power of three we hope that you wont miss it Thank You Kirsten and thank you everyone for joining I will be selecting one of you from a drawing to win one free space in one of those classes and we will send that out in an email with the replay link so that if you want to watch this again or watch it with your student you can Thank You Kirsten for designing these amazing classes Im so excited I cant wait everybody writes me at Khe Mary minute brave writer calm and let me know what you think we want your feedback we want to know if theyre working well for you so I hope youll stay in touch and let us know yeah Im putting that in the chat for people if they want it great thank you so much have a good evening everyone writing college admission essays in this video Id like to talk about the five paragraph essay which is very often taught in high schools and sometimes still in university as well its a kind of cookie cutter method to essay writing and I think its really problematic because it teaches students a kind of easy formula and then theyre stuck with this and they often dont know how to break out of that formula or to experiment and move beyond it so what Id like to do then is first of all explain what a five paragraph essay is then well talk a little bit about some of the problems with it and then in a separate video Ill talk about how you can move beyond it and write more organically now a five paragraph essay is not just an essay that has five paragraphs if only were that easy its instead a whole series of rules that are associated with this kind of structure and Ill first go through some of these rules and the kinds of things that are typically taught in high school and then well look at some problems as mentioned so a five paragraph essay then consists of an intro three body paragraphs and a conclusion and the intro typically starts with whats referred to as a hook okay so we start with a hook and this can be anything that seems remotely interesting so it could be a dictionary definition a quotation basically anything you can google at 2:00 in the morning theres obviously a problem with this already you can see that you know youre trying to make your essay attractive and interesting without first worrying about writing college admission essaysyour topic or your thesis instead youre just trying to sound interesting right which is a bit removed from the topic yet so then we mentioned the topic okay we have the topic next and then we have the thesis and thats sort of the structure of your intro you zoom in towards your thesis it doesnt seem to matter too much how far away you start from your thesis as long as you say something general and eventually gets your thesis everything is a-okay now the thesis is supposed to consist of a number of things it should be exactly one sentence long so if youve got a lot to say I guess youll just have to cram it into one sentence it should be the the last sentence of your introduction so the last sentence and of course in a longer essay that gets problematic because you might have your thesis you know after the third or the fourth paragraph but were only being taught to write a very specific kind of essay and then the last point and probably the most problematic one is that your thesis should state three arguments so three arguments one for every body paragraph okay so very rigid exactly writing college admission essays
