to figure out you know where do they begin give us you know what give us a couple tips for how students can get started what can I do so Im pretty basic is read the questions you know you can go on the common application theres seven different prompts and I always tell sins ok go through and get rid of some theyre just some you have no interest in fine good you know because the last one is write about anything you want so you always have one right but is there something that speaks to you and then lets talk about that you know why is this one speaking to you right so I you know Im Im just sort of like lets lets narrow this down a little not a lot and then I talk to people and Im feeling the energy I can just I mean maybe Im wrong but I dont think Im wrong that much Im on this when someone starts to talk about something and you see they lean in you know and their eyes go up and youre like okay theyre into this you know if theyre going like not so much so you know body language thats why visuals are sometimes good when working with people and in particular in terms of getting started you know reading the questions I think is super awesome theyre a couple exercises and Ill I can share beats with folks in the follow up what do you what is whats one of your favorite brainstorming exercises Ill just say when I when I hear something or see something or even read something theyve written Ill just say I want you to do a writing essays about literature brain dump dont worry about sentence structure this is not an essay its nothing it is who what when where why and how I want to see it I want to hear it I want to touch it I want to smell it I want to taste it and thats all you have to do get that back to me yeah now that if nothing else is a good exercise for writing whether that becomes an essay who knows but its a its a good method for any writer learning how to write yeah some of the exercises and again Ill follow up with this that I love are similar to a brain dump but its this one that I mentioned l21 details where you just write down 21 random facts about yourself and students would be surprised at how the 17th or 18th detail it might seem kind of random but theres some little gem in there oftentimes that pops out the other one is this essence objects exercise that I mentioned that involves finding particular objects and associating meaning with them so for me an essence object might be like this friendship bracelet that Im wearing that my wife gave me that represents my connection with my best friend and the cool ritual of like every year she makes a new bracelet for me and it wears off and we you know rema are able to remake our connection which is kind of a cool you know I think its a cool metaphor were gonna open it up just in two minutes by the way for you saw Ethan Sawyer just joined the room thats thats been logging on on my laptop yeah hes gonna do QA get some questions going so were gonna one of the chatbox in just a writing essays about literaturesecond so that folks can ask questions theres another thing that Ill say the student I mentioned this already but I think its really important for students to spend this time developing their list because Parc mentioned you know look at the questions youre not going to know youll know the common app questions but youre not going to know the Supplemental essay questions officially which is to say those additional essays that each school is you know not every school but many schools asked for youre not gonna know those officially until August but you can look at past essays and kind of see you can learn something about the school for example the famous example B University of Chicago you google University of Chicago supplemental essay questions and youll see their you know their library of past essay questions and usually theyll probably do this again this year I cant see that they would change it but you can pick any of those questions and go back and use one of the past you Chicago essay questions if thats a school that youre interested in but some schools are gonna ask about why you want to attend this school the why US essay and writing
