Lanyon chooses to die because he fears a world without God Ive highlighted God because that was one of the purposes that I said Stevenson has then I look at jackals fear of Discovery as a hypocrite because hes got secret desires and habits which could cause a scandal if they were discovered and so he creates hide to live out those habits and desires for him because he experiences them through hide this makes him a hypocrite and the hypocrisy of middle-class men was one of the purposes and themes that I highlighted earlier then another fear I have is hides fear of death and punishment well punishment was an idea that linked to the idea of God punishing the wicked and making sure that the good found their reward so that was one of my themes and purposes a contextual fear is the readers fear of scientific discovery which is now starting suggests that actually the Bible is not true evolution has taken its place and therefore God in a metaphorical sense has died people are losing faith and so that was the theme around God again as I was doing my plan how to write short essayI realized there was another theme that I hadnt considered which was the theme of drug addiction and the dangers of that I know that Stevenson Ive had to take drugs in order to control his lung disease is tuberculosis and this is something that his readers would want to be punished in the novel which is why Jekyll is killed off and then finally weve got the readers feeling of suspense about what is likely to happen next and thats the normal reason you have tensions mystery and fear in your text now if I go back to my purposes you can see now why I might have alternative interpretations so on the one hand I might be arguing that he is an atheist and his novel is trying to show that God is dead there is no God but at the same time most of his readers will believe in God so hes got to package the same plot in a way that shows actually God is punishing the wicked which is why both Jekyll and Hyde are killed off at the end its to please those readers and then another purpose is to just give them lots of gothic and sensational description that would have got his readership really interested in the novel how to write short essay
