essay down and lay it out for me so that I knew without a doubt what I was supposed to be doing and so I want to help you with that I want to give you what I wish I could have gotten instead of the yeah do these things instead of having somebody be like hey just kind of do a book proposal that meant absolutely nothing to me so I want to help you not have that experience by laying out what goes in a book proposal what order things should be in how long each thing should be and well go from there [Music] step one you need the cover page and the cover page is going to probably have the word proposal up at the top and then itll have your books title and then in a sort of sentence its a semi sentence without punctuation without punctuation youre going to say what age range this is for and then genre in the word count but generally speaking so like even if youve written sixty 3122 words youre going to say sixty-two thousand words because its easier on the eyes and it makes more sense you can tell them the exact word count later on and then youre going to say by your name and possibly a single way to reach you like I tend to put my website there so that they can figure out who I am if they want to really quickly and then if youre represented by a literary agent youre going to put that down in the corner and all of their like contact information so they can figure out who theyre supposed to tell and talk to you about taking you on um so thats the first page ever completely first page on writing the college application essay second page is going to be your table of contents and youll put in the page numbers after youve finished everything so that you know exactly which page numbers to put it on but that allows the publisher to look at it and be like oh hey I want to skip straight to the synopsis um I know to go to page nine for the synopsis or whatever right so then youll do a table of contents and that involves everything else thats in the proposal so then after that your next page will be the one sheet and these are sometimes helpful sometimes not super helpful better to include it and have it not be needed because its only one page than to not include it and have it be needed in a proposal its a lot more useful if youre actually going to conferences to pitch and you bring a one sheet it kind of goes back and forth or some editors and agents love them others are like why are you kidding things youre about to tell me all of this information why are you handing me this right so sometimes its useful sometimes its not in that situation but in a proposal it does give a very quick snapshot of what youre aiming for there and that is going to consist of again that sentence like on the cover page um title is a genre novel proposed at work and okay thats thats how that goes and then youll have a hook which is essentially your elevator pitch its one or two sentences you can say it in 30 seconds or less um that just describes the story and get somebody interested in it and then you write some back cover copy nope this isnt the back cover copy on writing the college application essaythat will probably be used on the book because editors and publishers have specific staff writers where theyre at in order to write that stuff they have people who specialize in back cover copy that they wont write but it does help them because it gives them a very short synopsis of heres the general story arc heres why I can sell and if you can help them with that then they know that you can also hook readers later on and then on that same one sheet to end it all off youll have a short author biography which is one to two paragraphs about yourself probably with a picture of yourself a nice professional one and that tells them a little bit about who you are what you do and how you started writing and how to reach you so again I put my website online sort of thing and then okay the next page youre done with one sheet is the long autobiography and thatll be at least two to three maybe four paragraphs of information about yourself starting back with how you started writing and where you went to school and why youre qualified to write this book getting on and on and on by this point youve probably written a few on writing the college application essay
