Besides the fact that this state is the size of a small dog, I can't help but noticed that most of this "Island" is very clearly not disconnected from the continental US.

My answer is the most american thing ever; a giant space laser. We take a huge laser channeling the overwhelming power of the sun and shoot it at the state, destroying the whole thing.
You may call it unethical, but the creatures inhabiting Rhode "Island" have kept this lie up for centuries. It's time to finish it.
