The tale of the town of Dogville always seems to become a topic of discussion near Halloween for quite a few descendants of the city and those who lived through the invasion. This is why the interesting events should be shared. The legend begins in early October of 2000, when the chilly air filled the lungs of citizens in the small town of Dogville, hidden by the brush of a forest. The town was known for its Pumpkin Palooza, a celebration of pumpkin harvest and creativity with the orange fruit held every October. Throughout the year, outside of October, citizens spent their time tending to their pumpkin patches in preparation for activities such as pumpkin carving, the biggest pumpkin competitions, a pumpkin-themed dance, themed foods, and voting on the best Halloween-decorated house on the block.
However, a sinister force was in the air regarding an alchemist. Among the preparations for the festival, the mysterious figure snuck a serum into the personal wells of each resident, giving it enough time to take effect.
The civilians unknowingly drenched their utensils, their clothes, and even cooked their food with this mysterious liquid mixed with the well water. Thankfully, it did not have any effect…on humans, that is. It was not until the pumpkin carving contest that disaster struck. It started with a twitch, an insect looking like it was moving beneath the thin membrane of the pumpkin. Naturally, this went unnoticed until the pumpkins began to rapidly shake, a green ooze spewing from the knife-carved designs. Woody limbs began to sprout from the fruits, allowing the pumpkins the ability to freely roam. Screams erupted from the citizens of Dogville, hysteria spreading like a disease from the sight of these animated monsters. Some tried to injure the pumpkins with pitchforks or various makeshift weapons from the festival booths to no avail. The possessed pumpkins ran to the fields of aging pumpkins, projecting their green goo all over the soil and watching as the liquid dug into the ground, akin to a worm. The pumpkins in the field, too, became creatures of terror. Their green stems dug into their own outer layer, tearing a face into the ribbed surface before descending upon the horrified audience.
Efforts to destroy the quickly developing pumpkins were ineffective. Cutting them in half would create two new pumpkins. Trying to burn them temporarily stunned them before like a parasite, the pumpkins became resistant to the abuse. Their reign of terror lasted the whole night with no hope in sight. Though the citizens continued to fight against the dark creations, trying to force the pumpkins back beneath the ground to reclaim the land they claimed was rightfully theirs.
Amongst the chaos lay the alchemist, watching as her Frankenstein creations reigned mayhem on the inhabitants of Dogville. She remained silent until daybreak, observing numerous civilians opting to leave the town rather than reclaim it. Despite the valiant fight from the remaining individuals, Dogville would lose its residents. Legend has it, the pumpkins seem dormant, though they come back to life to strike down anyone daring to enter onto their sacred land. They are said to be particularly active on Halloween night.
This story is rooted in mystery, constantly sparking debates between skeptics and believers. Beyond the credibility of the legend, there is something to be learned from it. The rebellion of these pumpkins against the civilians of Dogville raises the question of who to blame. The Dogville inhabitants constantly used and discarded these pumpkins, only allowing for their glory to be seen when competing or when carving permanent scars before the orange flesh begins to rot and decompose. Of course, the pumpkins also terrorized anyone in their way as they wreaked havoc down on the town and ran them out of their homes, but who came first? The pumpkin or the human? Such a seemingly silly story can spark up such an interesting conversation; it is all based on perspective.
