Matcha is Japanese green tea which is finely ground into a powder. It is known for its beautiful green color and earthy taste. Recently, matcha has taken over the internet and many people have replaced their daily coffee with a daily matcha latte. Matcha contains caffeine but is seen as much healthier for the body than coffee, which is why people are replacing their coffee with matcha. Consumers should know the quality of matcha consumed as well as the type best used for lattes. With influencers hopping onto the trend and producing their own matcha, like Emma Chamberlain, it is important to know the quality of the matcha you are consuming.
There are three different grades of matcha powder, the highest quality grade being ceremonial. Traditionally, this grade of matcha is used during tea ceremonies in Japan. Daily grade matcha is likely what most people use, as it is similar to ceremonial, but used more often with milk and sweeteners. The last grade is culinary. This grade of matcha is used for cooking and baking. Culinary grade matcha is more bitter than the other grades and has a very bold taste. Culinary grade is considered lower quality in comparison to the rest of the grades, due to its bitter taste and non-vibrant color. This grade of matcha is not suited for lattes or tea as many people do not enjoy the bitter taste. Using a suitable grade and higher quality matcha will make lattes taste much better! Next time you make matcha, keep an eye out for the color! Matcha, with a darker, more vibrant green, means a very high quality of matcha, while a more yellowed green is a sign of a lower quality. Happy matcha making!
