True crime is the media that tells the story of the victims, oftentimes murder and gruesome stories. True crime is a huge genre of media many people enjoy, there are podcasts and books dedicated to true crime. While knowing the horrors of humanity is okay, it is questionable to consume it for the sole purpose of entertainment, as if it is just another TV show or podcast. Consuming food and speaking of the horrors of a murder without consent from the victim's family is just inhumane, which is what popular social media figure, Stephanie Soo used to do. Even after Soo decided to switch over to a podcast, she treats the podcasts as a fictional story, ads in between significant parts of the crime story as if it is just a cliffhanger, when in reality it was life or death for the victim.
Stephanie Soo is just one of the people engaging in these morally wrong activities. There are many reasons why engaging and telling true crime as entertainment is morally wrong. Many times the narrator of the crime is not getting consent from the family of the victims involved in the crimes, simply taking from articles read and research that was done. There are many situations where the research done is not taking in all sides of the story or in general the research was not done thoroughly enough. True crime has a high possibility of misrepresenting the victims or anyone involved in the crime. Thus disrespecting the family and victims themselves.
Producing true crime media is wrong, but what about consuming it? While the intention may be simply to consume media or educate oneself, it is still harmful. Treating true crime as entertainment is once again disrespectful to victims and their families, the brutal murder of a human is not meant to be treated as a tv show or a story. Not only does it affect others but also yourself, true crime could lead to high levels of paranoia, consuming so much media speaking of the brutality of man is a potential gateway to paranoia as one might start to assume there is only bad and everyone is a serial killer or a kidnapper. These are only a few reasons why true crime should not be supported, being human means to be curious but there are other ways to educate yourself on these topics. The News is a simple way to get knowledge on crimes yet it is not too invasive into the families nor glamourising the crime.
