Autumn is here, which of course brings pumpkin-spiced everything! The origins of pumpkin spice can be traced back to trade routes from Asia and the Middle East, where it was used to enhance flavor. Eventually, the flavor became a staple in American kitchens when making pumpkin pie. Interestingly, pumpkin spice contains no pumpkins in the recipe; it is simply a blend of mainly cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice (the unripe berry from the pimenta dioica tree), and sometimes cloves. Pumpkin spice is now mainly associated with lattes since the 2000s due to Starbucks. Of course, it is easier to grab a drink from Starbucks when you are busy and just need a quick drink. However, considering the political boycott and for the sake of saving money, if you have time, you should make this latte in ten minutes or less as a treat to yourself!
You will need ½ cup of strong hot coffee or 2 shots of espresso, 2 cups of any kind of milk, 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin, or more to taste, 1 tablespoon of your sweetener of choice, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, a saucepan, and a whisk. You can also add whipped cream if you’d like, but it is optional.
First, add your milk, pumpkin puree, and sweetener to the saucepan over medium heat. Allow the milk to heat until hot but not boiling. It should feel thicker, and it should appear thicker as well. You will then remove the saucepan from the heat and add in your vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, and caffeine. Make sure to taste the mixture to ensure it is to your liking. Pour your mixture into a mug and sprinkle on more pumpkin spice either directly onto the latte or onto the whipped cream.
There you have it! A warm and comforting treat to defend against the crisp air of Autumn and to even bring back some nostalgic memories. Grab your coat, light some candles, and stay cozy during this chilly weather with your pumpkin spice lattes!
