Potential Impacts to the community

Teachers

  1. Problem: Construction noise will adversely affect class instruction. Solution: Low noise excavators will be used and mufflers will be installed on all the equipment to ensure that everything is done to minimize noise pollution from the work site.
  2. Problem: Safety of the students. Solution: Flag persons, warning signs, temporary walkways, and fencing will ensure that students do not wander onto the construction site or encounter any hazards.
  3. Problem: Excessive dust and dirt introduced into the air due to open excavation. Solution: 1) The site will be dampened with water throughout the day to minimize on airborne dust transfer. 2) Dust filters will be affixed onto the fence on all side to further cut down on airborne dust pollution.


Parents

  1. Problem: Safety of the children Solution: Flag persons, warning signs, temporary pathways and fencing will be uses to ensure a high level of safety.

Residents

  1. Problem: Additional airborne dust introduced due to open excavation. Solution: The excavation site will be dampened, and dust filtering mesh will be use to ensure airborne dust is minimized as much as possible.
  2. Problem: Roadway congestion/diverted traffic Solution: Additional traffic signals and flag persons will be employed to minimize congestion by guiding traffic in an efficient manner.
  3. Problem: Movement of heavy construction equipment. Solution: Equipment traffic will be guided to reduce disturbance to residents and normal roadway traffic.

Local businesses

  1. Problem: Noise and dust disturbance may temporarily drive business away from the area. Solution: The same precautions used to curtain airborne dust and noise disturbance will help to reduce impacts.
  2. Problem: Traffic congestion in front of business. Solution: Traffic signals and flag persons will help to reduce congestion as much as possible and if there are any it will be segregated to only peak rush hours throughout the day.

Workers

  1. Problem: Close proximity to the school and houses will introduce safety issues and possible interference from on-lookers. Solution: The dust filtering mesh fixed onto the chain-link fence to control dust will act as a sort of privacy screening and tall fencing will stop trespassers from entering the work site. Additionally, security guards, cameras, and lights will add a further layer of protection to eliminate the possibility of equipment tampering or theft during the night time.
  2. Problem: High average summer temperatures experienced in Guangzhou will add additional stress and exhaustion. Solution: Air conditioned break rooms and hydration will be provided at no cost. Additionally, workers will be able to take periodic breaks throughout the day.
