WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
‘People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them’. James A. Baldwin
Apart from being extremely enjoyable and enabling students to learn about the past - that is, to understand the past and, through it, come to a far better understanding of the present - history also offers students the opportunity to acquire and improve on many of the key skills that are needed outside the classroom. These include questioning the reliability of information, selecting and recording key data and reaching balanced judgements.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE IN S3:
At the start of S3, pupils take a tour of the Middle Ages, covering topics as diverse as William the Conqueror, the Silk Roads, Joan of Arc and Mansa Musa. We then carry out an in-depth study of World War 1, investigating its causes, the Western Front and its impact on Britain. Finally, we examine the rise of the Nazis in Germany.
ASSESSMENT APPROACHES:
Pupils will complete an assessment at the end of each topic. These will test basic knowledge, as well as the ability to analyse the causes and consequences of key events. Each assessment will have ‘challenge’ questions, encouraging pupils to engage with historical scholarship and to retrieve topics they have studied in previous years.
