WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
Music education is important as it can improve a student's academic abilities and social skills while encouraging a love and respect for music which can last a lifetime.
The Music course includes music performance, listening, theory and composition. It focuses on "doing," and teaches pupils how to perform, literally, anywhere in the world. In the music classroom, pupils can also learn to better communicate and cooperate with one another through teamwork and discipline. Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take measured risks.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE IN S3:
Music education comprises the teaching of all things music-related. In S3, pupils will continue to expand their skills on their two chosen instruments, working through various performing materials. Listening and literacy skills are developed through project work on various musical styles and cultures. Pupils are encouraged to use their instrumental and listening skills in composing their own music based on what they have learned.
ASSESSMENT APPROACHES:
An on-going approach in Music is for pupils in S1 – S6 to self and peer-assess performances. Short-term targets are discussed and agreed upon by the pupil and her/his teacher. These are checked at an established time and reflected upon to formulate next steps. Listening tests follow at the end of each topic to confirm Knowledge and Understanding.
