WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
Gàidhlig is a progression course for pupils who have studied Gaelic through Gàidhlig Medium. Learning a new language allows you to make connections with different people and their cultures. Language is at the core of thinking. You reflect, communicate and develop ideas through language. Studying Gaelic will deepen your knowledge and understanding of Scottish culture and heritage.
The recent revival in the Gaelic language means there are now more career opportunities for people who can speak it, for example teaching, the performing arts, media and literature and on TV and radio.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE IN S3:
The course is delivered through Listening, Talking, Reading and Writing activities and pupils are encouraged to speak and write in a coherent, accurate and appropriate manner.
The course will consist of three units:
· Understanding Language. The purpose of this unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop Listening and Reading skills in the contexts of Literature, Language, Media and Culture. Learners develop the skills needed to understand, analyse and evaluate simple texts.
· Producing Language. The purpose of this unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop Talking and Writing skills in familiar contexts. Learners develop the skills needed to produce simple texts in both oral and written forms.
· Literacy. The purpose of this unit is to develop learners’ Reading, Writing, Listening and Talking skills in a variety of forms relevant for learning, life and work.
ASSESSMENT APPROACHES:
Understanding language tests your reading and listening skills.
Producing language tests your talking and writing skills.
Literacy tests your ability to communicate ideas and information orally and in writing
qualification.
