COURSE DESCRIPTION
The National 4/5 Gàidhlig Course offers you the opportunity to develop and extend a wide range of skills. In particular the Course aims to enable you to develop the ability to:
• listen, talk, read and write in Gaelic, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context
• understand, analyse and evaluate texts, as appropriate to purpose and audience in the contexts of literature, language and media
• create and produce texts, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context
• apply knowledge and understanding of language
• apply knowledge of Gaelic heritage and the cultural heritage of others
Gàidhlig: Analysis and Evaluation Develop listening and reading skills in the contexts of literature, language, media and culture. You will develop the skills needed to understand, analyse and evaluate straightforward texts.
Gàidhlig: Creation and Production Develop talking and writing skills in familiar contexts. You will develop the skills needed to create and produce straightforward texts in both oral and written forms.
Gàidhlig: Literacy Develop reading, writing, listening and talking skills in a variety of forms relevant for learning, life and work. You will develop the ability to understand straightforward ideas and information presented orally and in writing. You will develop the ability to communicate ideas and information orally and in writing with technical accuracy.
Added Value Unit: Gàidhlig: Assignment (N4 only) This will provide you with the opportunity to apply your language skills to investigate and report on a chosen topic. This assignment will allow you to demonstrate challenge and application.
To achieve National 5, pupils sit externally marked exams in May.
Paper 1: Leughadh (reading) (30 marks) and Sgriobhadh (writing) (20 marks) Reading: Applying reading skills in understanding, analysis and evaluation to one unseen text. Writing/Literature: One critical essay on literature studied in class from the following categories: drama, prose, poetry, film and TV drama, or language.
Paper 2: Eisteachd (listening) (20 marks) Apply listening skills to understand, analyse and evaluate a spoken Gàidhlig text.
Performance Assessment: Comhradh (talking) (30 marks) To provide evidence of the learner’s talking skills in Gaelic in a discussion of up to 6-8 minutes in any suitable own-choice topic
Writing assignment: Obair shonraichte-sgriobhadh (20 marks) Creative or discursive writing assignment completed in class incorporating writing in a chosen genre and writing for a chosen purpose and audience.
WHAT WILL MY HOME LEARNING COMMITMENT BE?
Learning of vocabulary and grammar is crucial to make progress in a language, you will be expected to learn grammar concepts and do some exercises to apply the new concept. You will also be preparing written answers to a range of questions in Gaelic to enable you to use these in essays and discussions with other students.
