WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
By studying French, pupils will gain an understanding of an important European and world language. Due to historic links and linguistic evolution, French is closely related to English (and Scots!), so it will help pupils widen their vocabulary and gain a better understanding of both languages. By learning a foreign language now, pupils will develop the necessary skills to learn any other language they might want to study in the future. With a focus on life and work, they will develop the skills and qualities to live and work abroad – whether it be in Europe or anywhere on the globe.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE IN S3:
In 3rd year, pupils will be completing the “Modern Languages for Life and Work” SQA Award at SCQF 4. By the end of the year, they will have the skills necessary to pursue French to National 5 and further. By focusing on the Life and Work Award, pupils will get a chance to practise their Listening, Talking, Writing and Writing skills in day-to-day situations (asking for directions, going to the restaurant, finding your way abroad…) and will also focus on Employability skills, such as creating a CV, cover letter, and going through a job interview in French. On top of the Award, pupils will study a short French novel, giving them a taste in French literature.
ASSESSMENT APPROACHES:
The Award is completed via different Unit Assessments that will be carried out throughout the year in all 4 skills. They will need to show that they understand the language (in listening and writing) and that they can use it (in speaking and writing).
POSSIBLE CAREERS!
A qualification in a Modern Language means the pupil has basic competences that could be used directly in a work situation (especially if considering a career in Business or Tourism for example) but will also be a strength when applying for future studies such as Primary Teaching (N5 French being a requirement for most universities) or if pupils wanted to study French alongside a subject they want to specialise in, such as Catering, Law, Business Studies, and so on.
