WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
S3 Drama encourages young people to build on pre-existing knowledge from S1 and S2, expand on their drama vocabulary and to be able to analyse their own and others acting to a high standard. Students will develop important skills such as creativity, adaptability, collaboration, enthusiasm and confidence.
Drama gives you the opportunity to use your imagination and express yourself in creative and practical ways. It is particularly suitable for those who love being creative, getting their ideas across in a dramatic way and communicating their ideas with others.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE IN S3:
By the end of S3 Drama you should be able to devise and perform a drama to a high standard within the one period and will be expected to explore various characters with various ages/background stories and personality traits.
In S3 Drama you will also start the National 5 Production Skills Unit where you explore different areas of production in great depth and create a portfolio of work around these areas. This can be achieved in a creative and practical way: such as crafting miniature scale set designs or costume designs and working with various costumes.
Drama: Production Skills - In this part of the course, you will:
• Explore and develop your production skills and use these skills to present drama
• Use problem solving skills in order to generate ideas for presenting drama and present ideas in a production portfolio
Towards the end of S3 Drama you will start a Drama Skills Unit which will be completed to a National 5 standard. You will be assessed at national level on this small-scale production to best prepare you for the demands on the National course.
You will study mature and sensitive societal topics/issues which you will then complete independent research for and eventually create a powerful and meaningful drama for an older target audience.
Drama Skills - In this part of the course, you will:
• Develop your drama skills and ways of communicating thoughts and ideas to an audience
• Learn how to respond to stimuli (things that prompt ideas for drama)
• Develop your understanding of how to portray character
• Learn about form, genre and style when creating and presenting drama structure
• Reflect on your own progress and that of others
ASSESSMENT APPROACHES:
You will be expected to complete various end of unit assessments as well as acting assessments which will be on-going throughout the year. By the end of S3 Drama, you will be prepared to tackle a National 5 past paper and produce a final performance which will be graded at National level.
