COURSE DESCRIPTION
Modern Studies is all about studying the society around us. It is about looking at people and the way they interact with each other, how the world is run and how things can change and influence what happens to us. We look at social, political and economic
issues on three different levels: local, national and international.
Unit 1: Democracy in Scotland
to develop skills by using sources of information to detect and explain exaggeration and selective use of facts and develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of
democracy and the political system in Scotland
Unit 2: Crime and Law
to develop skills of using sources of information to make and justify decisions and develop a
detailed knowledge and understanding of social issues in the United Kingdom drawn from a study of crime and the law.
Unit 3: Global Conflict
to develop skills of using sources of information to draw and support conclusions
and develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of international issues, focusing on a study of a significant world issue.
ASSESSMENT
To gain N5 Modern Studies pupils must complete the following assessed pieces:
- Prelim Exam
- Assignment (20 marks)
- External Exam (80 marks)
WHAT WILL MY HOME COMMITMENT BE FOR THIS COURSE?
Regular homework will be set by the class teacher. Students can expect to be doing at least 11/2 hour of study per week which will include a selection of: End of Topic formal homework , Consolidation of notes from previous week /Completion of exercises as home practice. Assignment and Exam preparation
