WHY STUDY THIS SUBJECT?
The main purpose of English is to offer every learner the chance to acquire new and develop existing skills in communication through listening, talking, reading and writing.
The study of English can provide students with a fresh and creative angle with which to approach their studies and indeed their lives in general. Studying English will improve and develop essential communication skills needed for the modern, and ever changing, world of work. An enjoyment and appreciation of Literature will give students the ability to develop this into an interest in books and reading as they move away from their studies and into their adult lives.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE IN S3:
In S3 the learning in English will develop the ability to work independently and co-operatively depending on the task. Learners will continue to build confidence in the skills taught and abilities shown in S2.
Specific skills developed will include planning, researching and note-making, presentation (oral and written), techniques for talking and writing, understanding, analysis and evaluation of texts read, knowledge of the elements that make up English (punctuation, grammar, aspects of style, word choice etc.).
Learners, in S3, will now be on a learning journey towards the National qualifications. They may experience some elements of the National courses. This is to better prepare them for their assessment year in S4. The course will still look at a broad range of literature and will aim to challenge and engage their critical thinking skills.
ASSESSMENT APPROACHES:
Teacher and peer feedback will be provided and most assessment will be formative to encourage development and self-improvement in all areas. Some practice in working under test conditions for summative assessment will be given. Pupils will be assessed throughout the course to establish an appropriate National level for the following year.
