Artist Statement:

For this assignment we were required to create a surrealism collage from cutouts of paper and magazines, and then to paint a version of the collage we had made. I knew that or my collage, I wanted there to be a lot of strange things, maybe a little bit related, like with Salvador DalĂ. I was inspired by the fish, which I thought could be the focus of my piece. The fish, as well as many other objects present, were meant to be distinctly out of place. The Cactus, for example, is in the completely wrong climate, and the fish, out of water and "levitating" is definitely not in place either. Finally, I chose other weird things, like the bagel with the road sign between it like some bizarre fortune cookie, and the man flying on his parachute thing.

For the surrealism collage, I used some magazine cutouts, as well as a little bit of cardstock paper. For the surrealism collage painting, I used purely acrylic paint on a piece of canvas paper.

Beginning the process, I chose paper cutouts that I found in a magazine that were "inspiring" to use in my collage. Once my collage was formed, I began sketching out where the different shapes where going to go. After I had made the sketch, I began working on the landscape aspects of the painting. Once I had gotten these down, I moved to objects like the cactus, the parachute man, the bagel thing, and finally, the fish.
